British Council for School Environments Leading charity in education, design and construction Set up in 2006 - mission to  research, develop and communicate best practice in all aspects of school design and construction Areas of work - membership, events, study tours, research, programmes, industry awards, national school environments week, advocacy and national advisory role Membership - 400 organisations: 100 schools, 100 local authorities, 200 major design, architect, construction and specialist suppliers www.bcse.uk.net

Schools account for around 2% of UK greenhouse gas emissions, roughly the same as all the energy and transport emissions of Birmingham and Manchester combined. This is equivalent to 15% of the country’s public sector emissions.  Zero Carbon Taskforce for schools, January 2010

Why create the Centre?
No leading education think tank – no think tank designed for the post bureaucratic age Fusing education, design and the built environment using web 2.0 Rethinking policy and practice New tools, research and partnerships

Our first project The UK Hub of the Third Teacher Fusion of worlds – education,  architecture and design  Collaborative project with Kingston / Croydon Council  Helping teachers to support change in space ahead of major capital investment

Early successes Director on journey from digital tourist to resident  Linkedin contacts from 5 – 400+ in 2 weeks Positive following on Twitter & Facebook  Coverage in Building, BD, and 4 blogs New contacts and potential projects
What’s next?
In March 2009, we launched the Great Schools campaign to start  a national debate about what makes great schools and learning environments for the 21 st  Century … …   and to make the most of  the UK’s biggest investment in school buildings
At the heart of the campaign is a landmark inquiry into the impact of school environments on improved outcomes for children and young people  led by Baroness Estelle Morris. We report in March & June 2010 Apr 09  c all for evidence  … big conversation… expert sessions… inquiry on tour… research… commission begins… UK seminars… witness sessions… survey … interim report…  Mar 10  … final report  Jun 10
We have spoken to 800 people so far… Our plan is to speak to 80,000… We want to create the first open source inquiry and commission
