Transition to ICD-10
Based on a Hospital’s annual revenue of $100,000,000 as an
example, here is a look at the potential impact of not being
prepared for the ICD10 Deadline of October 1, 2015:

Let’s assume the current amount of coders needed to meet billing requirements is, as an example
10 coders regardless of whether they are in house or remote contracted coders.
Many organizations including Blue Cross Blue Shield are reporting Hospitals are finding ICD-10
coding can take 2-3 times longer than ICD-9 coding.
Transition to ICD-10 on 10/1/2015 would then require approximately 20 coders to clear the same
amount of charts as it is estimated that each chart will take as much as 50% longer to complete
Consequently if you consider of the 10 average charts each coder is estimated to complete per
day(which is half of today’s production) it is expected that half of them could be denied because
of mistakes with the new ICD-10 codes
Based on your average monthly billing of $8,333,333 and a denial of between 40-50% more of
monthly claims filed you could have a cash shortfall of 3.3 to 4.1 million dollars per month.
