Teachers In-Service
       Program

Welcome Teachers!!! 
TISP, College of Engineering Chengannur
-arjun
We are developing!!! But…
     Education has the
     – power to transform society in a single generation;
     – provide children with the protection they need from
       poverty, exploitation and disease; and
     – give them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reach
       their full potential
Number of out of school children decreased from 25
million in 2003 to an estimated 8.1 million in 2009
     The main challenges are:
      – Reaching some 8 million children not yet enrolled
and ensuring retention of all students till they
complete their elementary education (Grade 8)
      – Very outdated theoretical syllabus
      – Global rate of Teacher Absenteeism is 20%. In India,
          25%
      – Ensuring education is of good quality
2 12/27/12
Need for Improving Quality of Education

No of Engineers in India > China,
    Korea (on the rise )
India has just 214 per million
    – South Korea = 1435.
    – Japan = 765
    – US = 750
    – China has 340. D
Doctorate degrees were less than 1 per
cent of graduate engineering degrees in the
    country.
30 per cent of fresh engineering graduates
are unemployed even one year after
    graduation,
Only 17.45 percent of technical graduates
in the country are ready to be employed!
    – Rest 82.55 per cent??

Hear from you!

     What do you think about
     – your school,
     – your students,
     – challenges they face,
     – challenges you face?

What can we together to improve the
            quality of students?

4 12/27/12
How can we improve the Quality
     Some tangible school-related factors
      – Class size
      – Separate learning spaces for each class
      – Child-centered teaching-learning practices
      – Use of classroom relevant teaching-learning
           materials
      – Continuous assessment of students understanding
      – Experimental Learning
      – Teacher knowledge
      – Regular evaluation of teaching-learning practices
      – Continuous professional development for the teacher
      – Time devoted to teaching by teachers
      – School meals
      – Health programmes, such as de-worming
      – Availability of clean drinking water

      – Separate toilets for girls

      Orient School Students towards Engineering
      STEM has been receiving attention
across the globe and is expected to
    increase

About IEEE
IEEE is the world’s largest professional
     association dedicated to advancing
technological innovation and excellence for the
     benefit of humanity.
     Non-Profit organization
Members over 4,60,000 across 170 Countries
     Provides learning opportunities within
     engineering.
A dedicated board for improving the education
     Activities – EAB
     – Improved focus on India

    Lesson plans
IEEE has developed several lesson plans to connect students ages 8-18 with the
world of engineering. These hands-on lessons reinforce key engineering
concepts while building students’ critical thinking, teambuilding, and problem
    solving skills.
    IEEE STAR
    TryComputing.org
Global computing education resources for pre-university teachers, school
    counselors, parents, and students.
Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS)
EPICS is a program that organizes university and high-school students to work on
engineering-related projects for local area humanitarian organizations.
    Presidents' Scholarship
Established in 1999, the IEEE Presidents’ Scholarship recognizes a deserving
student for an outstanding project that demonstrates an understanding of
    electrical engineering, electronics

          12/27/12
TISP – Teacher in Service Program
Provides a forum for IEEE volunteers
     to demonstrate the application of
     engineering concepts with teachers.
     Helping teachers bring exciting hands-
     on engineering lessons into their
     classrooms.
     Helps students to explore their
syllabus and have a different approach
     to studies.
     Approximately 3,200 pre-university
educators have participated in an in-
     service program, impacting almost
     3,50,000+ students worldwide.

9 12/27/12
WHY TISP
Students gets excited when they do
      than they read or hear
TISP aims at engaging students on
      Hands-on
The number of students who created
models and number of models created
are the direct metrics of the success of
      the program
Initiates the spark to try, create and
      innovate
      Empower volunteers to work together
      with schools around them
10 12/27/12
TISP initiates a chain reaction

11 12/27/12
About the workshop and follow up

The workshop will have some hands-on activity
that will be done together as teams of teachers
      and engineering students
For follow up, the volunteers and teachers are
      requested to keep in touch
Volunteers will be happy to visit school
Students can visit Engg. Colleges during events
      and project exhibition.
Identify some 4-5 experiments and lets
together develop training aids for them
Our efforts touches success if each student
12
makes a hands-on model by himself
