Two years of high school study in the same language. Three years of high school study in American Sign Language. (Please submit official transcript to DVC Admissions Office). 2. (This requirement can be validated by more advanced course.) 3. Satisfactory score in the SAT II: Subject Test in languages other than English. (See counselor for required scores.) 4. Score of 3 or higher on the AP Exams in languages other than English. 5. Score of 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Exams in languages other than English. 6. Satisfactory completion of a proficiency test administered by a community college, university or other college in a language other than English. 7. Satisfactory completion with "C" grades or higher, of two years of formal schooling at the sixth grade level or higher in an institution where the language of instruction is not English. IGETC stands for Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum. It is a general education program which community college transfer students can use to fulfill lower-division general education requirements in either the CSU or UC system without the need, after transfer, to take additional lower-division general education requirements. Depending on the campus to which one transfers and one’s individual circumstances, there may be additional non-GE lower-division graduation requirements to be met (i.e., foreign language, multi-cultural studies, American history) as well as upper division general education requirements. 2. Is IGETC an admission requirement? No. Completion of IGETC alone does not meet the admission requirement for either UC or CSU nor is it required in order to be admitted. Completion of IGETC does not guarantee admission to a student’s campus of choice. However, completing the lower division breadth/general education requirements—whether through IGETC or the campus-specific requirements—may improve a transfer applicant’s chances for admission to a competitive campus and/or program. 3. Is it advisable for all transfer students to follow IGETC? No. Some students may be better served by taking courses which fulfill the CSU General Education requirements or those of the UC campus, or college to which they plan to transfer. IGETC will be most useful to students who want to keep their options open before making a final decision about transferring to a particular CSU or UC campus. Once a student has identified a major, it is important for the student to work toward fulfilling any required preparatory courses, particularly in professional or “high unit” majors that select applicants on the basis of satisfaction of lower division major requirements. We encourage you to discuss your transfer plans with a counselor to help you decide if following IGETC is the best option for you. 4. Must the entire IGETC program be completed prior to transfer? Preferably, yes. If not, partial certification is defined as completing all but two (2) courses on the IGETC pattern. The student petitions for certification and either the complete or partial certification is sent to the UC or CSU. Each UC or CSU campus will inform the student that has submitted a partial certified IGETC of the specific timelines and courses needed to complete the IGETC. The UC or CSU is responsible for verifying that the missing IGETC course(s) has been completed. Note: Students need Area 1 and 2 completed to meet minimum transfer admission requirements. Therefore, partial certification that acknowledges a deficiency in Area 1 and/or 2 may also indicate a student does not meet minimum transfer requirements. Handouts: IGETC 5-18-2009 cj Page 3 of 4
- 4. 5. May coursework taken at other institutions be used to certify a student’s completion of IGETC? Yes, with stipulations. DVC will certify courses taken at other accredited colleges and universities under the following conditions: DVC will place courses taken at other California community colleges in the IGETC categories identified by the offering college. Courses must have been on that college’s IGETC list when the course was taken. Courses taken at other colleges/universities may be used on IGETC only if they are judged as equivalent to courses on any California community college IGETC list. However, except for California community colleges, coursework from other institutions will not be used to fulfill the critical thinking/English composition requirement (Area 1B). In addition, foreign coursework may not be part of a student’s IGETC certification unless the institution has US regional accreditation. In order to have your previous schools record evaluated for IGETC certification, please have your official transcript sent to DVC and then make a counseling appointment, requesting an IGETC evaluation. 6. Will students be required to earn a minimum grade in all courses used for IGETC certification? Yes. Students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in each course used for IGETC. A “C-” grade is not acceptable. Courses taken on “credit” basis may be used if the college catalog where the course was taken states that a “credit” grade is equivalent to a “C” or higher (DVC has this policy). Students are advised that there are limits on the number of units taken on a “credit/no credit” basis (14 semester unit limit for UC; a range from 0-40 semester units for CSU). 7. Is there a minimum unit value per course? Yes. All courses must have a minimum unit value of 3 semester or 4 quarter units. Students with both quarter and semester unit course work may find it difficult to combine the two in order to complete the required number of units. Additional coursework may be necessary in order to accumulate the required number of courses or units in certain IGETC areas. 8. Can a course be used both to satisfy an IGETC requirement and to fulfill a major requirement? Yes. Courses used to satisfy the IGETC requirements may be double counted toward preparation for major requirements except for individual CSU campus restrictions. 9. Can AP scores be applied to IGETC? Yes. Please refer to DVC’s IGETC form for the specific tests. AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 may be used to meet the requirement. AP exam may be listed in more than one area, but shall not be certified in more than one area except for Languages other Than English. 10. Can a course be used to satisfy more than one subject area? No. A single course may be used only once for IGETC. A course may be listed in more than one area, but it may be used to satisfy only one subject requirement. 11. Is certification of IGETC completion automatic? No. You must apply for IGETC certification at the DVC Admissions Office when you request your final transcript to be sent to the school to which you will be transferring. UC Campus-Specific IGETC Information Berkeley: IGETC is not advised for the Colleges of Engineering, Environmental Design, Chemistry and the Haas School of Business. The College of Natural Resources accepts IGETC. The College of Letters and Science selects from among transfer applicants those who have completed the equivalent of the College’s lower division skills breadth requirements and one way of satisfying this selection requirement is to complete IGETC in its entirety prior to transfer. For selection purposes, Berkeley requires completion of IGETC by the end of the spring term before they enter Berkeley for the fall semester. However, preparation for the major is also important. UC Berkeley graduation requirement in American Cultures: One course from: English 168, 177 Humanities 115 - if taken Fall 2004 or later Film 160 - if taken Fall 2007 or later Music Literature 112 - if taken Fall 1997 or later History 124, 126, 130 Sociology 135 - if taken Fall 1997 or later Davis: Students preparing for a bachelor of science are advised not to pursue IGETC and instead to concentrate on major preparatory work. Irvine: Although it is honored for all majors, IGETC is not optimal for transfers to the Schools of Engineering, Biological Sciences or Physical Sciences. Los Angeles: School of Engineering and Applied Science does not accept IGETC. Merced: The Schools of Engineering and Natural Sciences do not recommend IGETC. Riverside: IGETC is accepted for majors in the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. Business Administration majors should complete IGETC as well as lower division major preparation The College of Engineering and the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences do not accept the IGETC. San Diego: The IGETC is accepted at John Muir, Earl Warren, Thurgood Marshall and Sixth colleges only. Students completing the IGETC are welcomed at Eleanor Roosevelt and Revelle colleges; however, they must also fulfill the specific general education requirements of those colleges. San Francisco: Dental Hygiene is the only undergraduate program at this health science campus. IGETC is not accepted. Santa Barbara: The IGETC is not appropriate for students transferring to the College of Engineering and Computer Science major in Letters & Science. Students planning to major in: Biological sciences, Biopsychology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, or Geophysics can use the IGETC, but must be careful to complete lower division major prerequisites.
