VISION PRESENTATION

     Victor Dahlqvist
INTRODUCTION
● Before
    ● Storywriter
    ● Designer
    ● Producer
    ● Unfocused!
● Now
    ● Crossroads – Focus on one!
● Goal
    ● Focus on storywriting – become specialized.
    ● Other skills will help
INTRODUCTION
● Why this?
    ● Know many things – excel at none.
    ● More specialized – more valuable asset.
● Why now?
    ● Time is running out (CSN)
    ● Professional situation optimal.
● Must earn my place to keep it.
● Improve degree or waste it.
INTRODUCTION
● Important for my own sake...
    ● Explore and learn good practices.
    ● Growth – personal and professional.
● ...but also for employers, present and future!
    ● Specialized = Specialist.
    ● Good practices = Good employee.
● My target skillset makes me attractive on the market.
    ● Research.
    ● Wanted ads.
REWARDS
● Competative Advantages.
    ● New knowlege.
    ● New experience.
    ● Rare insights into the process.
● Good Practices.
    ● Reading.
    ● Writing.
    ● ..and more to come!
● The Screenwriter who works with games vs. The Gamewriter
    who works with screenplays.
REWARDS
● What I can offer:
    ● High-quality storylines – adapted to fit seamlessly with game
        mechanics.
● What collaboration will offer me:
    ● Experience.
         – Working on other people's ideas.
         – Working with industry-like pipelines.
REWARDS
● Best case scenario:
    ● Gain vital knowlege
    ● Gain additional experience
    ● Expanded portfolio
    ● Obtain advanced degree
    ● Become Employable in my desired role
CHALLENGES
● Requires very little in the way of resources, HOWEVER:
● Requires lots of invested (spare)time.
    ● Dicipline is a must!
● Requires at least one larger project.
    ● Limited window of opportunity!
● I have yet to put down a subject for my thesis.
CHALLENGES
● How can I tell?
    ● Sparetime – because I planned it that way.
         – Good practices!
    ● Limited window for groups – I must...
         – Identify sufficently challenging projects.
         – Settle for and be accepted as part of one of the above
           projects.
         – ...and before my position is filled!
    ● Experience with courses of this nature tells me, the good
        groups are formed early.
CHALLENGES
● Medium-term:
    ● Settling on a subject for my thesis.
         – Limited previous experience.
         – Will require guidance(!)
CHALLENGES
● Long-term:
    ● Potentially increased workload
         – Thesis
         – Project
         – Sources outside IGPS(!)
CHALLENGES
● Short-term:
    ● Finding a suitable group / project.
    ● (Already done!)
ABILITY
● Existing Skill set
     ● High stress-tolerance.
          – Allows me to handle a greater workload.
     ● Proven record of work within my field.
          – Helps in getting accepted into a dev-team.
● Motivations
     ● Most of the workload in highly creative.
     ● All of the work is certainly challenging!
     ● Good chanse for getting recognition.
● External Network
     ● IGPS Staff.
     ● Co-workers (12 O'clock Studios).
     ● Books(!).
ABILITIY
● Human Resources
    ● Mostly self-reliant
    ● Trusted Co-workers available for proof-reading, brainstorming,
        etc.
● Logistical Resources
    ● Office
    ● The 4 Bs
         –Bed
        – Bar
        – Bus

        – Bathroom
● Financial Resources
    ● CSN
ABILITY
● External Factors
    ● Interactive stories – common and incredibly popular!
         – Mass Effect
         – Dragon Age
         – Heavy Rain
    ● Screenwriters are common – training in interactive
        storydesign isn't.
    ● Not an easy market – but certainly not an impossible one!
    ● Always opportunities for talented gamewriters.

             and structure of the game.
STRATEGY

    ● Time Consumption: MEDUIM.
         – Always a risk.
         – Extensive experience in planning
         – Will only be planning for myself.
    ● Capacities: LOW.
         – Small risk that my skills are not yet enough.
    ● Resources: NONE.
         – I have all that I need.
    ● Validity of assumptions: MEDIUM.
         – Situation in the industry might change.
         – I may have misread signals.
         – I may not have all the fact
         – Always a risk(!).
