Immune System of shark
Sharks do not chew their food at all. Their teeth are designed primarily to capture or tear their prey. The
food is stored in the stomach for a variable period of time usually three days (although a study of a tiger
shark that died in captivity revealed that at the time of his death had on the inside of his stomach
remains undigested 2 weeks). The stomach releases strong acid that breaks down food and passes into
the intestine where all the nutrients are absorbed. What cannot be absorbed passes into the colon
before being released to the ocean where they serve as food for plants and bacteria?
The digestive system liver is your largest organ and accounts for up to 25% by weight of the shark. Liver,
being very rich in fat, very low density has a dual function- firstly to accumulate energy and other almost
neutral buoyancy which allows up and down with the same ease with which fish do. (Remember that
the shark has no swim bladder)

Scientists around the world are trying to determine the cause of the extraordinary resistance to
contract bacterial infections, parasitic infections or cancer that sharks possess. Several theories
exist one of which suggests that the proteins and minerals found in the cartilaginous skeleton
prevent infections. Another recently published theory is based on the discovery of a chemical
called squalene (found in the liver of shark) but this research is currently in development. There
biologists who think that the key to the resistance of cancer is in the cartilage of sharks. The
minerals and proteins prevent the formation of new vessels. Without blood a tumor does not get
the energy needed to grow and therefore the theory goes will decrease. This theory is still
controversial the immune system has a protein retards tumor growth. If this protein is likely to be
used in humans perhaps could develop cancer drugs.
Much of what we know about the human kidney function was discovered working with sharks.
The main component of cartilage which comprises the entire skeleton of sharks has been used to
create artificial skin for burn victims. There have been successful corneal transplants shark in
human eyes.
The shark liver oil is the basic ingredient in the production of various medicines. The immune
system creates antibodies sharks general and non-specific as ours. This means that the antibody
can fight disease since it is exposed to Studies of these properties. In the future, we might be able
to better understand ourselves, based on how other intelligent creatures see us...
Some sharks such as dogfish thorny, seem never to sleep completely, because they continue
swimming while “sleeping”. Researchers continue to study the sharks to learn more about what
happens inside your brain during sleep periods which could help the treatment of sleep disorders
in humans.
Researchers are developing new coverage for boats from the scales of sharks. Because of its
shape, size and texture, these scales help prevent algae and other organisms affect sharks. The
designers plan to extend this condition to craft.
