This case study discusses the implementation of logic gates using diodes. AND and OR gates were constructed using diodes and an LED. For the AND gate, the LED only glows (high output) when both diodes are open, allowing current to flow through the LED. For the OR gate, the LED glows (high output) when either of the diodes are closed, allowing current to bypass one of the diodes. Applications of these diode logic gates include use in circuits requiring multiple power sources for activation and security systems. Advantages are low cost and fast switching, while disadvantages include higher energy use than other circuits and limited to only AND and OR gates.
