The Importance of Knowing the True God Copyright Norman L. Geisler 2006
Knowledge of the Holy A. W. Tozer said, “ What you think of God is the most important thing about you” ( p. 1).
Why We Should Know God I. The most important thing about us is what we think of God.

We should be like God. 1. “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (Lev. 19:2). 2. “You shall be perfect as I am perfect” (Mt. 5:48). B. But we can not be God-like unless we know what God is like.
Why We Should Know God III. We can’t know the true God unless we know the truth about God.
Why We Should Know God John 4:24: Jesus said, “God is spirit and they who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” We cannot honor God by saying false things about Him. True worship involves affirming truth about God--things worthy of Him. True worship is worth-ship. Rev. 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for you have created all things….”

Recognizing a False God Rabi Kushner said: “ There are some things God does not control.” And we “…need to forgive God for not making a better world…” (When Bad Things Happen to Good People , 45, 147).
Recognizing a False God Stars Wars: “ The Force is everywhere.” “ May the Force be with you.” “ Prepare to meet the Force.”
Knowing a False View of God God’s Word has errors (50) God doesn’t know all (138) God has a body ( 33-34) God changes ( 143) (The Most Moved Mover) Clark Pinnock

The only way to avoid idolatry is to know and live the the truth about God. “ You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above …; you shall not bow down before them nor serve them” (Ex. 20:4).

Many Psychologist says, “Look inward and backward.” Christianity says, “Look upward and forward.”
Why We Should Know God VIII. If we do not live by what is above us, then what is below us will drag down what is within us.
Why We Should Know God The lower will pull us down: “ Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image like corruptible man--an birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things… who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever” (Rom. 1:22-25).
Why We Should Know God The Higher will pull us up: Paul wrote: “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14). Again, “ Seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God” (Col. 3:1).
“ To Succeed, Aim Higher”
