GROUP WORK In small groups brainstorm and discuss: 1-What are our roles as mentors/ collaborating teachers? 2-How can we actively support our LA’s? Share in large group
Taken from Teacher Mentoring Certification Program: Jill Prushiek FED professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
What can we do to support our LA? Demonstrate a lesson Provide a one-day lesson plan Co-observe another teacher and discuss afterwards Explain school procedures for reserving computer lab, tv/vcr/dvd Provide materials for a unit Make materials together
LA Support (cont.) Suggest options for dealing with difficult student behavior Give LA a guided tour of the school Examine examples of student work together Listen as LA discusses his/her evaluation of examples of student work Encourage LA to try new teaching strategies
LA Support (cont.) Ask questions to help the LA clarify and deepen planning/processing Provide examples of classroom discipline/management/motivation Engage LA in a conversation reflecting on an issue or concern Share stories about your own journey or growth as a teacher Give your LA a “Top 10 List”
“Top 10 List” (part 1) Fridays are our casual days and a lot of teachers wear jeans. Pam Kolve is the secretary who knows EVERYTHING. Ask her for your student lists. The staff are friendly, caring, jokesters, and full of variety. If you need help, ask anyone, they will step up to the plate. Diane is the copyroom goddess, treat her well.
Top Ten List (part 2) The copyroom is packed in the morning, be prepared to wait in line for a long time. Paula is the AV specialist and she will help you with TVs, VCRs, laminating, and the like. Payday Fridays (every other) are a time when most staff meets for camaraderie. Love the custodians-if you do you will reap the benefits! (Ex: A brand new overhead screen in one day.) Wayne is our custodian. He takes really good care of us. Taken from Pamela Larson: World Languages Department Chair and Spanish teacher at North High School (Eau Claire, WI, USA)
Taken from Teacher Mentoring Certification Program: Jill Prushiek FED professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Phases of First Year Teaching
Recap Continue to develop your teaching methods and procedures: umbrella effect Fish out of water Diverse LA abilities and personalities Diverse teachers and styles Give teaching options if possible Constructive criticism and feedback Classroom management system, please! Connect on a personal level Smile!
