What is Power Factor? • Power Factor is the measure of how effectively electrical power is being used • Power Factor involves the relationship between two types of power: Working Power and Reactive Power – Working Power–performs actual work of creating heat, light, motion, etc. – Reactive Power–sustains the electromagnetic field that is needed to run a motor (this is power that is essentially wasted energy, which is released as heat, and will degrade motor performance The Problem: • Up to 25% or more of billed electricity in a manufacturing facility is unusable and essentially wasted, in large part due to inefficient process motors. Over 75% of all manufacturing facilities in the United States are over 20 years old, yet they continue to increase capacity, and install new and more complex equipment, which often times puts significant strain on their aging electrical distribution systems.
