Infective endocarditis is an inflammation of the inner lining of the heart caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Common causes are streptococci and staphylococci bacteria. It often occurs in people with pre-existing heart conditions like rheumatic heart disease. Symptoms can range from low-grade fever to heart failure. Diagnosis is made through blood cultures, echocardiogram, and physical exam findings like heart murmurs. Treatment involves hospitalization and prolonged intravenous antibiotics over 4-6 weeks. Prevention includes good oral hygiene and antibiotic prophylaxis before certain medical procedures for high-risk patients.
