Informal Evaluation of the Expanded Core Curriculum
Using the Holiday Scavenger Hunt
Introduction  4 areas covered in this evaluation Compensatory academic skills including communication modes Social Interaction skills Independent Living skills Orientation and Mobility
THE HUNT
The History of the Scavenger Hunt Began 16 years ago with about 5 students grades 6 and over Held at the Maine Mall during the busiest time of year Students had one list, $2, and competed in small groups Students from around the Portland area came together for this one day Parents Not Invited on this trip
Scavenger Hunt Now 3-4 different Lists,  plus a bus group 15-30 children, 3 Mobility Instructors, 10 TVI’s, a Rehab Teacher and a VR counselor Still grades 6 & up, with no parents invited $4 to obtain items on list Students from 10 counties in Maine Continues to take place a few weeks before Christmas
The Day Begins 9:30 Students meet, do brief introductions, and review the “rules of the hunt” Bus students leave with mobility instructors  9:45 Students are broken into groups of  2-3 based on age, compatibility, and skills Students are given their lists to review in whatever  reading media they use
 
 
Set   out for the hunt Students leave to find the items on their lists. They are provided sighted guide if needed, but the guide provides no assistance! Staff person follows the group, some more closely than others for safety purposes Students must return by a certain time or lose points for being late
 
 
 
Winners Students meet back at  11:15 to see who got the most items. If there is a tie, the winning group is the one with the most money left Students gather into groups of their choosing for lunch at the food court Students eat together, adults eat together Students check with their driver to see what time they must gather to return home
 
11:30 Bus students return They have been given a map and bus schedule, planned the route,  and traveled by bus as a group to the Mall
 
 
Expanded Core Rating Scale
Done by a person who doesn’t usually work with the student Only job at the time is to complete the rating scale Done by a TVI or O&M PROCEDURES

Social Skills Communication within group Self Advocacy Appropriate voice for public place Seeks help appropriately
