Information and Communication Tools (ICT)
Introduction
ICT tools stand for Information Communication
Technology tools. It means to digital infrastructures like
computers, laptops, printers, scanners, software programs,
data projectors, and interactive teaching box.
ICT can contribute to universal access to education equity
in education the delivery of quality learning and teaching,
teacher’s professional development and more efficient
education management, governance administration.
Various ICT tools
 Computer
 Laptop
 Internet
 Interactive whiteboard
 Tablet PC
 iPad
 iPhone
 Mobile phones
 Digital cameras
 Multimedia equipment’s(audio/video)
 Skype
 Video conferencing
Computer
Computer is an electronic device that is designed to work
with Information. The term computer is derived from the Latin
term ‘computare’, this means to calculate or programmable
machine. The Word ‘Computer’ usually refers to the Central
Processor Unit plus Internal memory.
The computer is an electronic device that takes input from
the user and processes these data under the control of a set of
instructions (called program) and gives the result (output) and
saves future use. It can process both numerical and non-
numerical (arithmetic and logical) calculations.
According to functionality, computers are
classified as:
• Analog Computer: A computer that represents numbers by
some continuously variable physical quantity, whose
variations mimic some system’s properties being modeled.
• Personal computer: A personal computer is a computer
small and low cost. The term”personal computer” is used to
describe desktop computers.
• Workstation: A terminal or desktop computer in a network.
In this context, the workstation is just a generic term for a
user’s machine (client machine) in contrast to a “server” or
“mainframe.”
• Minicomputer: A minicomputer isn’t very mini. At least,
not in the way most of us think of mini. You know how big
your personal computer is and its related family.
• Mainframe: It refers to the kind of large computer that runs
an entire corporation.
• Supercomputer: It is the most giant, fastest, and most
expensive computers on earth.
Laptop
Laptop computers, also known as notebooks, are portable
computers that we can take with us and use in different
environments. They include a screen, keyboard, and a
trackpad or trackball, which serves as the mouse. Because
laptops are meant to be used on the go, they have a battery
which allows them to operate without being plugged into a
power outlet. Laptops also include a power adapter that
allows them to use power from an outlet and recharges the
battery.
Internet
The Internet is a global network of billions of computers
and other electronic devices. With the Internet, it's possible to
access almost any information, communicate with anyone else
in the world, and do much more. Internet is a technology of
connecting multiple computers together through a network.
Various types of small networks include Local area
network (LAN), Personal area network (PAN), Metropolitan
area network (MAN), Campus area network (CAN), etc.A
global computer network providing a variety of information
and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected
networks using standardized communication protocols.
Interactive whiteboard
An interactive whiteboard, also known as a smartboard, is
an interactive digital device that allows users to project files
and manipulate them on a board’s surface.
An interactive whiteboard will only function when a
computer, projector and LCD display are present. A
whiteboard will display whatever is shown on a
user’s computer screen. When connected to a computer, the
interactive whiteboard transforms into a large-scale, touch-
sensitive version of a user’s screen. The user can control the
screen by touching it with a special pen or with a hand, rather
than a mouse.
Tablet
A tablet is a wireless, portable personal computer with a
touchscreen interface. The tablet form factor is typically
smaller than a notebook computer, but larger than a
smartphone. Since tablet PCs provide a different interface
than traditional computers, they offer unique possibilities for
graphics applications, games, and other programs.
iPad
The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple. It is
smaller than a typical laptop, but significantly larger than the
average smartphone. The iPad does not include a keyboard or
a trackpad, but instead has a touchscreen interface, which is
used to control the device.
iPhone
The iPhone is a line of smartphones designed and
marketed by Apple Inc. that use Apple's iOS mobile operating
system. The first-generation iPhone was announced by former
Apple CEO Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007. The iPhone has
a user interface built around a multi-touch screen. It connects
to cellular networks or Wi-Fi, and can make calls, browse the
web, take pictures, play music and send and
receive emails and text messages.
Mobile phone
Mobile telephone, also called mobile phone, portable
device for connecting to a telecommunications network in
order to transmit and receive voice, video, or other data.
Mobile phones typically connect to the public switched
telephone network (PSTN) through one of two categories:
cellular telephone systems or global satellite-based telephony.
Digital camera
A digital camera is a camera that captures photographs
in digital memory. Most cameras produced today are
digital, largely replacing those that capture images
on photographic film. Many more cameras are now
incorporated into mobile devices like smartphones, which can,
among many other purposes, use their cameras to initiate live
video-telephony and directly edit and upload images to
others.
Multimedia Equipment’s
Multimedia is a form of communication that combines
different content forms such as text, audio, images,
animations, or video into a single presentation, in contrast to
traditional mass media, such as printed material or audio
recordings. Popular examples of multimedia include video
podcasts, audio slideshows and Animated videos.Multimedia
can be recorded for playback on computers, laptops,
smartphones, and other electronic devices, either on demand
or in real time (streaming).
Skype
Skype is a proprietary telecommunications application that
specializes in providing VoIP-based videotelephony,
videoconferencing and voice calls. It also has instant
messaging, file transfer, debit-based calls to landline and
mobile telephones (over traditional telephone networks), and
other features. Skype is available on various desktop, mobile
and video game console platforms, and is operated by Skype
Technologies, a division of Microsoft.
Skype is software that enables the world's conversations.
Millions of individuals use Skype to make free video and
voice one-to-one and group calls, send instant messages and
share files with other people on Skype. Skype is free to
download and easy to use.
Video conferencing
Video conferencing is a live video-based meeting between
two or more people in different locations using video-enabled
devices. Video conferencing allows multiple people to meet
and collaborate face to face long distance by transmitting
audio, video, text and presentations in real time through the
internet.
Conclusion
The operation and usage of various information and
communication technology tools are known. The tools could
be implemented to enhance the education.
