INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES
INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES
Input devices - A device that can be used to insert data into a computer
INPUT DEVICE - KEYBOARD
 Keyboard is a typewriter –style device.
 Keyboard has a set of keys to enter letters, numbers, comma, semicolon and
other symbols.
 When the key pressed and produce the corresponding ASCII codes which can
be identified by the computer.
INPUT DEVICE - MOUSE
 The mouse has a two buttons and one scroller.
 It controls the cursor on the display screen.
 The mouse movement is possible only flat surface.
 We click the mouse button to select an option.
INPUT DEVICE - SCANNER
 Scanner is optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object
converts into a digital image.
INPUT DEVICE - BAR CODE READER
 Bar code reader or scanner is for reading printed codes.
 It consists of light source, light sensor and lens.
 The system gives fast and error-free entry of information into the computer.
 It used in places like supermarket, bookshops.
INPUT DEVICE - DIGITAL CAMERA
 Digital camera is used to capture images.
 It takes photos and send it as digital input to the computer.
INPUT DEVICE - TOUCH SENSITIVE SCREEN
 A Touch Sensitive Screen is a pointing device that uses the user to communicate
with the computer by touching the screen.
INPUT DEVICE – MAGNETIC INK CHARACTER RECOGNISTION
(MICR)
 MICR is a character recognition technology.
 MICR line is at the bottom of cheques are typically includes the document-type
indicator, bank code, bank account number, cheque number, cheque amount, and a control
indicator.
 It can be avoids the Human error.
INPUT DEVICE – OPTICAL CHARACTER
RECOGNITION (OCR)
 OCR is direct reading of any printed character.
 OCR can scan pa page from a book.
 The computer will identify the characters in the page as letters, punctuation marks and
stores.
INPUT DEVICE – OPTICAL MARK READING AND
RECOGNITION(OMR)
 OMR reads the pre-printed forms are designed with boxes which can be marked with
a dark pencil of ink.
 OMR enables the processing of hundreds or thousands of documents every hour
automatically.
INPUT DEVICE – LIGHT PEN
 A Light Pen is a pointing device shaped like a pen and is connected to a monitor.
The tip of the light pen contains a light-sensitive element which, when placed against the
screen, detects the light from the screen enabling the computer to identify the location of
the pen on the screen.
INPUT DEVICE – MAGNETIC READER
This input device reads a magnetic strip on a card. Handy for security reasons, it provides
quick identification of the card's owner..
INPUT DEVICE – NOTES TAKER
 Notes taker is a device that captures natural handwriting on any surface onto a
computer.
 Using an electronic pen, the notes taker displays the user’s handwritten notes, memos
and drawings on the computer and stores the image.
INPUT DEVICE – MICROPHONE
 Microphone serves as a voice input devices.
 It captures the voice data.
OUTPUT DEVICES
OUTPUT devices - A device that can be used to display the output to the computer.
OUTPUT DEVICE - MONITORS
 Monitor is a display screen, It provides a visual display of data.
Monitors are connected with the computer and are similar in appearance of TV.
 The common aspect ratio of televisions, and then computer monitors, has also
changed from 4:3 (width : height) to 16:9 (and 16:10).
OUTPUT DEVICE - PRINTERS
 Printer is prints text or images on paper and other media.
 Printed material(paper) is called as ‘hard copy’.
 The two main types of printers are impact printers and non-impact printers.
TYPES OF PRINTERS – IMPACT PRINTERS
Impact Printers – It containing a number of metal pins which strike an inked ribbon placed between the
print head and the paper
LINE PRINTER DOT MATRIX or SERIAL PRINTER
It is High speed printers. Large volumes of text
data can print.
A line printer can print 150 lines to 3000lines
Per minute.
Its print quality is low. It is very noisy to print.
It prints one line of 8 or 14 points at a time.
 It is moving across a line similar to
typewriters.
 The printing speed is around 300 characters
per second.
Impact Printers – It containing a number of metal pins which strike an inked ribbon placed between the
print head and the paper
THERMAL PRINTER
 It produce images by pushing
Electrically heated pins against
special heat sensitive paper.
LASER PRINTER
It can produce good quality
graphic images.
It use a laser beam(sharp) and
dry powdered ink To produce a
fine dot matrix pattern.
INKJET PRINTER
It produces a color print.
It combines three colors are
Magenta, yellow and cyan.
TYPES OF PRINTERS – IMPACT PRINTERS
OUTPUT DEVICE - SPEAKERS
 The computer can produce voice output using of speakers.
Voice output has become very common in many places like airlines, banks,
automatic telephone enquiry system.
OUTPUT DEVICE - PLOTTERS
 Plotters are like a printer it produces the graphical output.
STORAGE DEVICE - HARD DISK
 Hard disk is a magnetic disk which stores and retrieve the information.
 Data is arranged as a series of concentric rings.
 Each ring(track) is subdivided into a number of sectors.
 Each sectors holding a data(character or bytes).
STORAGE DEVICE - MAGNETIC TAPE
 A recording medium consisting of a thin tape with a coating of a fine
magnetic strip used for recording digital data.
 The tape itself is a strip of plastic coated with a magnetic recoding
medium.
STORAGE DEVICE - FLOPPY DISK
 A floppy disk, or diskette, is a disk storage medium composed of a disk of
thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic
carrier lined with fabric that removes dust particles.
Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive (FDD) .
STORAGE DEVICE - OPTICAL DISK
 It is a storage medium from which data is read and write by lasers.
 It is Random access storage medium.
 The information can be easily read from any point on the disk.
 CD-ROM stands for Compact Disk - Read Only Memory.
Thank You..!!
