What is insomnia ?
 It is a sleep disorder that is characterized by
difficulty falling or staying asleep
 It can occur at any age, but it is most likely to
occur as we age.
Insomnia Causes
 Can be short-term or Transient Insomnia
 Can be long-term or Chronic Insomnia
Causes of Transient Insomnia
Stressful triggers of
 An illness
 Injury
 Surgery
 Loss of a loved one
 Job loss
Sleep disturbances
 An exam
 Travel
 Problems at work
 Extremes in weather –
way too hot or cold
Chronic Insomnia Causes
Age :
 Insomnia more common with advancing age
 Means you wake up more easily and sleep fewer
hours
 Spend less time in deeper sleep stages
 Activity helps good sleep
 Older men may need to use toilet more during
the night due to prostate enlargement
Chronic Insomnia Causes
Alcohol :
 May sedate and help you get to sleep, but
disrupts sleep cycle resulting in wakefulness.

Caffeine consumption :
 Coffee, tea and cola contain the well-known
stimulant.
 Drinking before bed or even late in the day, can
stop you falling asleep
Chronic Insomnia Causes
Depression :
 Well-known cause of sleep problems.
 Worries and chemical imbalances associated
with depression cause insomnia.
 Insomnia resolves once depression improves.
Tips for combating insomnia
 Use black out curtains or sleep mask to avoid
awakening due to sunlight.
 If you can't sleep, get up and read, listen to soft
music or do something that is not overly
stimulating.
 Use earplugs or white noise machines to drown
out disturbing sounds
 Avoid late night heavy meals.
 Eat a small bedtime snack.
