1 Overview and system requirements
Overview
This manual guides you through the PTV Visum 2020 installation process. After installation
also read the document OVERVIEW_VISUM2020.PDF in the Visum DOC folder. This document
highlights the new features of PTV Visum 2020.
Software requirements
System requirements for PTV Visum 2020 can be found on our website:

 To install Visum, you need administrator rights.

2 Step by step setup
Before you start
Make sure that all other applications are closed.
Make sure you have received a CodeMeter dongle to manage the license information of
your Vision Traffic Suite products.
Connect the CodeMeter dongle to the computer or make it available.
Make sure you have received an e-mail with the ticket code to retrieve the license
information.
Have the e-mail or the ticket code at hand.
Make sure you have downloaded the installation files for PTV Visum 2020 from the
download link provided in the e-mail or from the PTV Download Server.
Read the information about license provisioning in section 4. Depending on the system
configuration and the usage scenario it can be useful to provide a license prior to installing
the software (see section 4.4).
Installation of PTV Visum
Open the Windows Explorer.
Go to the directory that contains the downloaded installation files.
Start the SETUP*.EXE file.
The Select Setup Language window opens:
In the drop-down list, select English.
Confirm with OK.
If your system already contains an installation of PTV Visum the Choose an installation
window opens: Otherwise, continue with step 8.
Make the desired changes:

In order to replace a previous installation of PTV Visum 2020
choose the desired entry.
New installation… In order to create a new installation of PTV Visum 2020
choose this option.
Note
This installation process displays fewer windows than when
replacing a previous installation. In this document, skip the
instructions for the windows that you do not see.
Click the Next button.
Read the license agreement.
Select the I accept the agreement option.
Read the privacy policy.
Select the option I have read the data privacy policy.

Select a folder where PTV Visum 2020 shall be installed.
In the following window, you can select the components that you want to install.
From the drop-down list, choose the desired installation.
We recommend the Standard installation.
Tip: Alternatively, you can select the components to be installed individually:
 Additional Data: includes symbols free for use in your projects.
 Junction Preview: provides the functionality for the Vissim node preview.
 Python 2.7.15: installs the script language Python together with supplementary
libraries. This is required, for example, to use the Visum AddIns.
 Python 3.7.4: installs a newer version of Python, because there is no support for
version 2.7 anymore.
 Examples: includes various sample networks and examples for using the COM
programming interface in Visum.

 Documentation: includes the entire software documentation. Here you can find
information on the COM interface, a description of new functionalities and the
Quickstart tutorial for getting started. Select the languages in which you want to
install the documentation.
Select the directory where you want to install Python 2.7.15 and Python 3.7.4.
Specify in which folder of the Windows Start menu or in which group of the start screen
the shortcuts are to be created.
By default, a common group is used for all programs of the Vision Traffic Suite.

Choose the tasks to be performed during installation:

Note
Select this option if you are a system administrator and want to
define the licenses for all users of a system (see chapter
“Systemweite Lizenzauswahl”).
Tip
Alternatively, the license selection can also be made after the
installation with the PTV License Manager, or by each user
through the license management in PTV Visum 2020.
Create shortcut
on the desktop
If the option is selected, desktop shortcuts are created for the
current user or for all users of the system.
Installing
Codemeter
Runtime 6.80
If the option is selected, Codemeter Runtime 6.80 will be
installed.
Do not select this option if the mentioned version of Codemeter
Runtime already exists, as a new installation could damage the
existing version.
Creating a
virtual Python
environment for
PTV Visum
If this option is selected, a virtual Python environment is
automatically created (see
https://docs.python.org/3/library/venv.html).
The virtual Python environment is set up in the
EXEPYTHON37MODULES subdirectory of the Visum
installation. It offers two additional features:
 With the Python package manager "pip" additional packages
can be installed within the environment, which are then
available in scripts started from PTV Visum. The package
manager makes sure that the installed packages are
compatible with the ones shipped with Visum.
 In development environments that support virtual
environments (e.g. Visual Studio Code), the virtual
environment set up for PTV Visum with the included packages
can easily be used for script development.

Click the Install button.
If you have not installed an earlier version of PTV Visum and selected Python in step 16
Python, the Python scripting language will be installed in the selected versions during the
installation. Continue with the step 1 in section Finishing the setup process.
If you have a previous PTV Visum version installed, the following windows open:
Click Repair.

Close the Python installation process with Close.
Confirm with Finish.
Finishing the setup process
At the end of the installation process, the following window is displayed:
Select the desired option.
Confirm with Finish.
First start of the software
When you start PTV Visum 2020 for the first time, some of the following configurations are
performed:
 The files with the map projections are copied to the user directory. They can then be
edited if required.
 The License Management – PTV Visum window opens if one of the following cases is
accomplished (see section 4.4):
 Multiple valid licenses were found and no license was specified for all users during
installation.
 No valid license was found.

When you choose the license to be used, the selection will be saved and used by default
in future sessions. If just one valid license is found, this license will be selected. This can
for example happen when using single seat dongles. Afterwards, the License
Management – PTV Visum window will close automatically.
 If the selected license includes the HBEFA module and the HBEFA data package has
not been installed yet, a message opens. It can be ignored if HBEFA will not be used.
Else install the HBEFA data package, which can be downloaded from the PTV download
server.
Note: During the installation of Visum, required add-on programs, for example
drivers, will be installed.

If you have checked the Documentation option in step 19 in the section Installation of
PTV Visum, the Quickstart tutorial is available in the directory C:USERPUBLICPUBLIC

With the help of two example projects, the core functionalities of the software are explained
step by step.
Tip: Alternatively, you can open the tutorial via the Help > Examples > Tutorial
Quickstart menu.
Example files
If you have checked the Examples option in step 19 in the section Installation of PTV
Visum, the example files and short tutorials are available in the directory
C:USERPUBLICPUBLIC DOCUMENTSPTV VISIONPTV VISUM 2020.
The demonstrated functionalities are described in the file README_EXAMPLES_ENG.PDF.
Tip: Alternatively, you can open this folder via the Help > Examples > Open
Examples directory menu.
Documentation
 Visum manuals can be found in the DOC folder of the installation on your hard drive. If
you have kept the default settings, the manual can be found in the file:
C:PROGRAMMEPTV VISIONPTV VISUM 2020DOCENGPTVVISUM2020_MANUAL.PDF.
 The manual is also available as Help, which can be accessed via the Visum menu and
directly in windows via the F1 key.
 OVERVIEW_VISUM2020.PDF describes the most important new features.
 The complete reference of the Visum COM interface is included in the PTV Visum COM
Help. If you have installed the examples in step 19, section Installation of PTV Visum,
you will find an introductory text and examples in the directory C:USERPUBLICPUBLIC
DOCUMENTSPTV VISIONPTV VISUM 2020.
 OVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF provides information about the protective mechanism of the
PTV software. Consult these documents if you have any problems with your dongle.

Service packs
 A service pack provides up-to-date data files. At the same time, bugs will be fixed and
new functionalities will be added.
 Sign up for the free automatic notification on new service packs:

 You can download new service packs from our web server.
 To install a service pack, start the file UPDATE *.EXE with a double-click.
 Afterwards, choose the installation to which the service pack shall be applied.

4 License provisioning
4.1 Overview
The licenses you need to use the software are administered on a CodeMeter dongle by
WIBUSystems AG. To use the dongle, you need the software “CodeMeter Runtime Kit”.
The software version used by the products of the Vision Traffic Suites is usually installed
automatically. For further information, please read the document
OVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF in the DOC folder.
The following aspects are determined by the license:
 Licensed product, product variant, and release version
 Licensed add-on modules and extensions
 Number of licenses and additional settings like the number of instances or common
usage in software packages
 Maximum network size
 Available languages
 Limitation of usage period
 Entitlement to upgrade to succeeding versions
Furthermore, the license contains the following data:
 Customer name
 Maintenance period (if available)
 Responsible sales/support partner
 Other specific information
The licenses for products of the Vision Traffic Suite are usually perpetual if no other
arrangements exist. The license allows you to use the licensed product version and all
service packs / updates released for this version. If a maintenance contract is in place, you
can still use software versions released during the term of the maintenance contract and
the respective service packs. Therefore, in this case PTV will provide new license data
covering the new version with each software release.
You have the following possibilities for using the licenses:
 As single seat licenses
The dongle will be attached directly to the computer hosting the application software
of PTV Visum 2020. It provides licenses to use a specified number of instances of one
or multiple products of the Vision Traffic Suite on this computer by a single user. You
can transfer these licenses to another computer by connecting the dongle to another
computer. This provisioning mode does not require a permanent network connection.
It is NOT possible to use such licenses in remote desktop sessions. Virtual machines
with explicit association of the USB port carrying the dongle are supported.
 As network licenses
The dongle is attached to a computer that acts as a license server. This can be a
dedicated license server or a computer used as a workstation. Using network licenses,
multiple users in the company network can use a certain number of instances per user
of one or multiple Vision Traffic Suite products simultaneously. When you start the
application, the license is checked out and when you exit the application, the license
is returned. Thus, concurrent usage of the same license through multiple users is
possible (floating/concurrent licenses). Licenses must be prepared specifically for
usage as network licenses. A permanent network connection between license server
and application computer is required. Network licenses may be used in remote
desktop sessions and Windows server environments. For specific technical aspects of
this provisioning mode, please refer to the document OVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF in the
DOC folder.

4.2 Installation of the dongle
If you are using Vision Traffic Suite products for the first time, you will receive a CodeMeter
USB dongle by mail. At first the dongle will not contain any product licenses.
If you already own a CodeMeter USB dongle, all licenses for Vision Traffic Suite products
can be maintained on the existing dongles.
It is possible to use multiple dongles and license servers in parallel.
For further information on dongle installation, refer to the document
OVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF in the DOC folder.
4.3 Activation of licenses
Newer or modified license information are transferred to the dongle during the activation
process.
With each reissue or modification of licenses, a contact in your company receives an e-mail
with a ticket code like A43UT-PMXRC-43D76-KF3AH-Y5GDQ. In the online activation
procedure, this ticket is used to retrieve the new license data from the PTV license
activation server http://activate.trafficsoftware.ptvgroup.com and transfer it to the dongle
(see 4.3.2). Each ticket can be activated only once. In some cases, multiple equivalent
licenses for different dongles are covered by the same license number. In this case, the
ticket can be activated multiple times on different dongles. The total and the remaining
number of activations are displayed during the activation process. However, such a ticket
may not be activated more than once on the same dongle, as this will cause problems
when running the software.
Keep the ticket codes. They can later be used to remove invalid licenses from a dongle
(see 4.3.5).
When the license is activated for the first time, it is bound to the dongle used. Successive
license updates to the same license can only be applied on this dongle. For licenses with a
maintenance contract, PTV usually binds the license to a specific dongle in advance. On
other dongles, the activation process will then fail.
4.3.1 Requirements and preparation
If you would like to activate a license, you have to make the following preparations
depending on your system configuration and perform the activation process in different
ways:
 If there is an internet connection, the dongle must be attached to the computer on which
the activation process is carried out. Otherwise, proceed as described in section 4.3.4.
 The firmware of the dongle must be updated to version 1.18 or higher. An automatic
update of the dongle firmware is triggered during the installation. This may fail due to
problems with the Internet connection. You can then check the firmware version in the
CodeMeter Control Center and initiate the update manually if an internet connection is
available.

 The CodeMeter Runtime Kit must be installed on the computers used for hosting the
dongle and for activating licenses. You need version 6.80 or higher. The installation
happens automatically in the installation process described in section 2. When the license
shall be provisioned as a network license (see section 4.3.3), the installation of the
CodeMeter Runtime Kit will be done through the separate installation package “PTV
VISION TRAFFIC LICENSE SERVER SETUP.EXE”, even if PTV Visum 2020 has already been
installed before. This can be downloaded from the PTV download server.
 An internet connection is required. If the computer has no connection to the internet,
proceed as described in section 4.3.4.

4.3.2 Installing a single seat license
Install the software as described in section 2.
In step 25, section Installation of PTV Visum, leave the option for selecting a license
unchecked.
In a web browser, open the page
<http://activate.trafficsoftware.ptvgroup.com/index.php>.
The browser window displays a web page where you can activate the license.
Enter the ticket code from the e-mail.
An overview of the tickets to be activated is displayed. In case of new licenses, only the
provided ticket will be activated. If the provided ticket involves an update of a previous
license, for example for a new maintenance period, available older or newer updates from
other tickets might also be applied. Afterwards the license on the dongle is updated to the
latest version. The overview page lists all available tickets in their order. The ticket used
is highlighted. If the ticket contains licenses for multiple dongles, the total and remaining
numbers of licenses are also displayed.
Click the symbols, to list the product licenses contained in the tickets.

Check the contents.
Click the Activate Licenses button.
Choose the local dongle to which the licenses shall be transferred.
Note: When updating already activated licenses, this must be the dongle used for the
initial activation.
Confirm with Activate Selected Licenses Now.
The license data is transferred to the dongle. Afterwards the license is available for usage.

The activation process is finished. You can close the browser window.
Keep the ticket code used.
4.3.3 Setting up a network license
Install the CodeMeter Runtime Kit on the system.
Configure the CodeMeter Runtime Kit for operation as a network license:
Install the separate installation package PTV Vision-Traffic-License-Server,
which is available on the PTV download server.
Note: Server operation is only activated with the PTV Vision-Traffic-License-
Server installation package. The installation is therefore necessary even if a product
of the Vision Traffic Suite and thus the required version of the CodeMeter Runtime Kit
has already been installed.
Activate the license (see section 4.3.2).
The license activation must be done on the license server computer, having the target
dongle installed. If the computer cannot be accessed physically, this can be done in a
remote desktop session. If the computer is not connected to the internet, proceed as
described in section 4.3.4.
4.3.4 Offline activation for license hosts without internet connection
In certain situations, for example when a dongle is hosted in a secured data center, the
license server may not have a direct internet connection.
If it is possible to connect the dongle temporarily to a computer with internet access, you
can proceed as described in section 4.3.3. After successful online activation, the dongle is
then reconnected to the license server.
If such a procedure is not possible, the license can be activated offline.

4.3.5 Returning licenses
In certain situations, it can be necessary to remove an activated license from a dongle. This
could be the case, for example, if the license was activated on the wrong dongle. Proceed
as follows:
Connect the dongle with the licenses to be returned to your computer.
Start the activation process (see 4.3.2 or 4.3.3).
Re-enter the ticket code that you used to activate the license.
A ticket overview is displayed.
Click the Re-host licenses button.
The product licenses to be returned are listed:
Click the Deactivate Selected Licenses Now button.
After completing the process successfully, the license can be activated on another dongle
by following the process described in 4.3.2 or 4.3.3.
4.4 License selection and pre-configuration
A software installation of PTV Visum 2020 is not linked to a specific license. The user can
switch between different available licenses. The License Management – PTV Visum can
be opened via Help > License > Manage licenses:

Section Description
Settings This section is hidden by default. If you expand this section, the known
license servers from the CodeMeter search list and their status will be
listed (see section 4.4.2).
Check out automatically, if possible:
If the option is selected, the first available license of the licenses
selected in the lower part is used in the order specified here. If it is
possible, the application starts directly.
If the option is not selected, the License Management – PTV Visum
window will be shown before the application is started in order to let the
user choose an alternative license.
Further reasons for a display of this window before starting the program:
 No valid license was found.
 Changes have been made to the selected licenses so that they no
longer fit the project work.
If only one valid license is found at startup of the software locally or in the
network, for example in case of single user operation, the window is not
displayed and this license is used automatically.
Licenses This section displays a list of the known licenses with detailed
information. The plus icons can be used to call up additional information
on the modules contained therein. If set, a time period restriction is
displayed. If the end of the time period is near or exceeded, this is
indicated by yellow or red markings. If the license information is displayed
in grayed out text, this indicates cached data that might be outdated.
Use license: Use the check boxes to select licenses for usage.
Sorting buttons: The sorting buttons serve to define the priority of the
selected licenses. If the first selected license is not available when
starting the software, the second one will be tried and so on.
Update all displayed licenses: Click the button to refresh the data. The
text is then displayed in black. Usually the data is automatically updated
after changes to a license on a dongle. Invalid or unavailable licenses are
displayed in red.
Remove from list: Click this button to delete invalid or unavailable
licenses permanently.

Note: The settings done in the License Management – PTV Visum window are
saved to the file LICENSES.DATA in the user directory.
4.4.1 System-wide license selection
In addition to this user-specific license selection, system-wide configuration can be defined.
This is useful for operation with remote desktop services, for example.
 Administrator rights are required to set up the system-wide license selection.
 For managing system-wide settings use the program “PTV License Manager”, which is
accessible through the start menu. The central settings made with this program are
stored in the file %PROGRAMDATA%PTV VISIONPTV VISUM 2020LICENSES.DATA. If this file
exists, the settings defined there are enforced for all users. No individual license
configuration is possible. Use the Delete saved license list button in order to reset the
central settings and allow individual license configuration by the users.
The system-wide configuration can also be defined during the software installation. You will
then need an activated license during the installation.
If you have selected option Select license and set as default for all users in step 25 in
section Installation of PTV Visum, the License Management – PTV Visum window
opens.
All licenses for PTV Visum 2020 are listed here. They can be licenses found on local
dongles or network license servers.
In the Use license column, select the licenses relevant to users of this computer.
Define the priority of license uses with the arrow buttons on the right.
Licenses higher in the list will be attempted to be checked-out first.
Note: For further information on license management, refer to the manual, chapter
1.4.1 MANAGING LICENSES.
Confirm with OK.
Restart the computer.

4.4.2 Adding license servers to the CodeMeter search list
The list of license servers displayed under CodeMeter server environment can be
extended in the WebAdmin of the CodeMeter Control Center. Proceed as follows:
Open the CodeMeter control center under Start > Programs > CodeMeter > CodeMeter
Control Center.
Click the WebAdmin button.
Click the Settings tab.
Click the Add new server symbol.
In the Server search list tab enter the license server’s name or IP-address to which the
dongles are connected.
Click the Add button.
The license server is displayed in the list under Codemeter server environment.

5 Installing Visum in the background
Installing Visum in the background (Silent Installation)
Visum offers the possibility to perform the installation automatically (silent installation). This
is advantageous if Visum is to be installed on several computers in a network. The
installation is then carried out in the background. No windows appear during the installation
that would demand any user interaction. Proceed as follows:
Start the installation of Visum on the command line by using the following parameters.
Adjust the name of the setup to the name of your setup file name:
SETUP_VISUM_2020.XX-XX_X64_FULL.EXE /SAVEINF="SETUP.INF"
Proceed with the installation as described in section 2.
For your settings, a protocol is recorded to the file SETUP.INF. A silent installation carried
out afterwards can then make the necessary settings based on this file, so no user
interaction is necessary.
Call the silent installation via the command line as follows:
SETUP_VISUM_2020.XX-XX_X64_FULL.EXE /SILENT /LOADINF="SETUP.INF"
Also note the following during silent installation:
Notes:
Due to licensing reasons, the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 cannot be installed in a
silent installation. You have to install it separately on each computer on which Visum
is to be installed.
The pre-selection of the license to be used as described in the installation process,
step Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden. in section Finishing
the setup process, cannot be performed for the silent installation. If multiple licenses
are available, you have to choose the license to be used on first start.
Installing Python in the background (Silent Installation)
If you want to install Python in silent mode, add the lines with the desired target directories
to the SETUP.INF file if necessary.
Python27Dir="<Target directory>"
Python37Dir="<Target directory>"
Make sure that the component python3 and/or python (for python2.7) is included in the
SETUP.INF file in the Components line.
If you have not specified a target directory for the installation of Python, Python will be
installed in the program directory of your operating system.
Also note that an installation of the Python version is only possible if this version is not already
installed on the target computer. This also applies to Python installations previously installed
with an Anaconda distribution.
Further options for the installation
 /SILENT: Wizard and the background window are not displayed. Progress window, error
messages and restart request are displayed.
 /VERYSILENT: Wizard, background window and progress window are not displayed.
Error messages and restart request are displayed.
 /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES: Error messages and warnings are suppressed. The
respective button for the default values is activated automatically.
 /NORESTART: Instructs setup not to restart even if it is necessary.
 /NOCANCEL: Prevents the user from canceling the installation process by disabling the
Cancel button.

 /LOADINF="filename": The installation loads the settings from the script file filename. If
the file name contains spaces, it requires quotation marks.
 /SAVEINF="filename": The settings of the installation are saved to the script file filename.
If the file name contains spaces, it requires quotation marks.
Further command line parameters can be found in the documentation of the used installer
INNOSETUP under: http://www.jrsoftware.org/ishelp. Under Other Information > Setup
Command Line Parameters you find a list of the command line parameters. Not all
parameters are necessarily available in the Setup.

6 Troubleshooting and further information
If Visum does not start …
If you have any problems installing Visum, contact our customer service at:
customerservice@vision-traffic.ptvgroup.com
Provide the following information:
 Your organization or company name
 Your dongle number (see OVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF for further information)
 The error message being displayed, for example “CodeMeter API Error Code 212”
