Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

           My Twitter PLN (Personal
           Learning Network) is inspiring
           food for thought!

           This presentation is partly a
           curation of excellent ideas and
           resources I’ve acquired from
           educators all over the world.
How To Start Your Own #PLN

have to say it to their face
  which would result in them
   kicking me in the groin.”

The 90-9-1 Principle
                           90% of users are the
                           “audience,” or lurkers. They
                           read or observe, but don’t
                           actively contribute.

9% of users are “editors.” They
                           rarely create content from
                           scratch.

                           1% of users are “creators.”
                           These people are driving large
Participation Inequality amount of activity and creating
                           new content.
The 90-9-1 Principle
To be fair, this study was conducted
      in 2006.

But how does this look in our
      classrooms?

What are we doing to promote and
      encourage our students to change
this? Especially if we’re asking them
      to shut handheld devices down
when they walk through the door?
Schools today must provide
opportunities for young people to create
knowledge out of the swirling clouds of
information that surround them 24/7. You went
to school because that’s where the knowledge was
stored. That was yesterday. Think how different
today’s world is. Today’s young people need
guidance in sifting through the flood of information
and turning it into knowledge.
They need to be able to
formulate good questions
— because computers
have all the answers.

LEARNING GOAL

Acquire new ideas for turning
our students into creators of
digital artifacts that in turn
help them to build a genuine
understanding of digital
citizenship.
SUCCESS CRITERIA

You leave this presentation
with something you can
implement and infuse into
the things you’re already
doing (e.g. media literacy).
What is Digital Citizenship?

If students created a Common Craft video, how could
it be use to communicate knowledge about ...

Tying It All
             Together
How do projects of this nature
encourage and promote students to
engage with the 4 C’s of
      Technology Education and to
              become Creators?
