- 2. Defination of intercaste/ religion marriages Intercaste/religion marriage, traditionally called mixed marriage, is marriage between partners professing different religions. Intercaste/religion marriage typically connotes a marriage in which both partners remain adherents to their distinct religion, and as such it is distinct from concepts of religious conversion, religious assimilation, cultural assimilation, religious disaffiliation, and apostasy.
- 3. History…. From the time of Kings and Queens, caste system has been practiced. In earlier days, it was customary to marry in the same castes. If anyone dares to disobey the rules of the society, he was confined to severe punishments. Whole community was barred from keeping any relation with the family where inter caste marriage had taken place. Customs and religions practiced were so strict and merciless that even sometimes the boy and girl were hacked to death by their own family members due to the pressures from the society.
- 4. Indian attitude towards inter-caste/religion marriages Indians had an orthodox mindset. They couldn't imagine marriages beyond the same caste , community and religion. Marriages should be in same community and caste . Who so ever dare for the inter-caste marriage face the consequences in terms of violence, social boycott, family boycott and death of the boys and girls ( honour killing).

- 6. PROBLEMS ATTACHED… The problem of caste system was so deep rooted that it took years for the Indians to come out of that idea. Even today also India is struggling to come out of this social menace. History reveals that efforts have been made by various social reformers and individuals to make India free from the clutches of caste system, untouchability and race discrimination.
- 7. Why rejected in india??? They fear of the social norms and social standing. Loss of reputation. The cultural difference- they believe that the couple will not be able to settle down and religiously follow each other’s culture. They believe that the children born out of the inter-caste marriage will not be perfect. Torture that the family and the couple has to face at the hands of the society.

A panchayat in Haryana has issued a death fatwa of sorts on the couple. 2. Megala 20 of thevar from village kattikulam ,madurai who was killed by her parents. 3. Not just villages kuldeep singh (thakur) and monica(gujjar) married under pollice protection 2006. Murdered in june. 4. Asha 18,sanjay kumar 24, who are living in hell.. They belong to same village in haryana .
- 10. The Superfluous Belief The set up of Indian caste system makes it clear that “One is born into a caste and this cannot be undone even with the saat pheras of sapt padi (Hindu marriage)”. Today, in Indian society the inter caste marriages are mostly the part of the city culture. The rural parts of the country still have a long way to go. • In villages ofIndia, people prefer their children to marry in the same caste and community; else they disown them. • Though there have been numerous incidents of the wife attempting suicide or being murdered, this has still not evaded the theory of caste system.

- 12. Steps to be taken… • It is the responsibility of the younger generation to make their elders realize that the rigid caste system is morbid and has a dark future ahead. The girl or boy should be introduced as a friend to the family and be allowed to earn their love and respect The qualities of the person you love should be highlighted in front of the family members Try and learn the customs of each other’s caste. This will enable you to earn the love of the family members Try and show your family members how this kind of systems are obstructing the progress of the nation

Steps that have been already taken… Government of India has made different laws to encourage inter-caste marriages Social activists and groups are actively contributing to the create awareness among the people of the hazards of not accepting the inter- caste-marriages Movies, plays, street plays, demonstrations, etc. have been used to demonstrate that inter-caste marriages should be allowed.
- 14. Government incentives…. 1. Government of Maharashtra & punjab – Maharashtra n punjab government has decided to gift Rs 50,000 to a couple opting for inter-caste marriage on 2010. 2. Government of Uttar Pradesh- They give cash incentive and interest-free loan to couples . Such couples may get interest-free loan of upto Rs 15,000 . 3. Government of haryana- haryana Government offers 50,000 each for intercaste marriage.
- 15. Present scenario Now people know that…. A successful marriage is not dependent on same caste and religion …..rather it depends on mutual understanding and compatibility. Today, there are examples where two people from totally different background and lifestyle come together and spend their entire life happy with each other. THANKS TO EDUCATION.
