This document summarizes a method for detecting quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the presence of outliers or phenotypic contamination. It describes the standard interval mapping approach, which uses likelihood ratio tests to identify QTL within intervals between genetic markers. However, this approach is not robust to outliers. The proposed method aims to make interval mapping more robust by maximizing a β-likelihood function using an EM-like algorithm. Simulation studies show the proposed method significantly outperforms standard interval mapping when outliers are present, while maintaining similar performance when data is clean. The document provides background on QTL mapping and defines genetic models used in interval mapping.
