The Impact of the Internet on
the media is exaggerated.
Discuss
Introduction
As a result of the proliferation of hardware, and the huge growth of
the web 2.0 e.g.YouTube, it is now much easier or prosumers to
create and distribute their own content, without the danger of being
negatively affected by big institutions. This can be of political or
entertainment nature. Castells argues that the public sphere for
sharing is now much more democratic, however this could be seen as
being exaggerated, as Fuchs states that the Internet is more of a
consumer media rather than a participatory media.
Paragraph 1 – Institutions control
mass media
• The Sun – Habermas: ‘mass media public sphere in appearance
only’ Public Sphere, cross-media ownership, lack of plurality,
gatekeeping, and agenda setting.Vital for society that people
can freely exchange opinions and be able to debate. Mass media is
poor for this as lack of plurality, people can only consume. UK news
is very concentrated, Oligopolistic market, huge production costs
means only 3 big players in broadcast and 3 big players in print
(NEWSCORP) also own 40% of sky. POWER.
Paragraph 2 – Insitutions create
false media texts to suit dominant
ideologies of consumers
• The Sun – Stuart Hall: Representation,
Dominant Ideology, Identity, and
Stereotyping. Detailed textual analysis of
Jihadi John picture…headline…etc.
Conclusion
• To conclude, I believe that the impact of the Internet has not been
exaggerated. The Internet has allowed more people than ever to have a
voice and to freely share and socially distribute and filter their own
content of choice online. This means that gatekeeping and agenda
setting of companies are becoming less of a problem. Over 5 billion
people will be online by 2020 and this will provide huge opportunities for
social filtering and freedom in the future. However, there is an element of
over-exaggerated change, as people still use the Internet for recreational
usage like pornography and entertainment, which is evidence of how the
impact of the Internet, in terms of politics and political freedom, may be
classed as being exaggerated.
Paragraph 3 – Internet allowed
more social filtering and
freedom?
• Jenkins – Spreadable media, function of
gatekeeping is partly transferred to the audience
in the case of online content. “if it doesn’t
spread, its dead” audience have control of
gatekeeping and what to share (social filtering).
NotInMyName
Paragraph 4+5 – Internet more
democratic
• Explain case study – Leadbeater:’more people
have a voice’
• Crowdsourcing, Democracy, Plurality
Paragraph 4+5 – People with no
money can create global news
• Castells: ‘Subordinate groups use mainstream and
online media have a huge opportunity to establish
social change’ – more now than ever. Hits onYouTube
(give example),Twitter retweets (example),
mainstream media change. Got addressed by Barack
Obama to UN general council, improved from 972
followers.
Paragraph 6 – Internet not really
changed anything
• Stats (YouTube, top 10 movies etc.) – Morozov
– “Technology changes all the time but
human nature hardly ever”
Paragraph 7 – However…
Fuchs – ‘non-political entertainment’
