Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electrically in the 1870s and are considered inventors of the telephone. They rushed their designs to the patent office within hours of each other, with Bell patenting his telephone first. This led to a famous legal battle over the invention of the telephone, which Bell ultimately won.
