Understanding the Basics
What is the Internet?
Definition: The Internet is a network that
connects millions of devices around the world,
allowing us to share information, communicate,
and access data.
Key Points:
It’s a system of interlinked computer
networks.
We use the Internet to access websites, send
emails, watch videos, and more.
How Does the Internet Work?
Data Transmission: Information travels over
the Internet in small pieces called “packets.”
Internet Service Providers (ISPs): Companies
that connect you to the Internet (e.g.,
Comcast, Verizon).
TCP/IP Protocols: Rules that allow different
computers to communicate with each other.
Analogy: Think of the Internet as a postal
system that delivers information in pieces to
reach your device.
What is a Web Browser?
Definition: A web browser is a tool
(software) that lets us view and interact
with websites on the Internet.
Popular Browsers: Google Chrome,
Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge.
Browser Purpose: Browsers translate
web addresses (URLs) into the content
we see, like text, images, and videos.
Basic Features of a Web Browser
Address Bar: Where you type in a website
address (URL).
Tabs: Allow you to open multiple pages in one
window.
Bookmarks: Save your favourite sites for quick
access.
Back and Forward Buttons: Let you navigate
between pages.
Private Browsing: A mode where the browser
doesn’t save your history or cookies
Security Features in Web Browsers
HTTPS: Shows that the website is secure,
protecting your data.
Warning Messages: Alerts about unsafe or
suspicious websites.
Pop-up Blockers: Prevent unwanted ads and pop-
ups.
Extensions/Add-ons: Small programs that add
extra features, like ad blockers.
• What is a URL (Uniform Resource Locator)?
– Definition: A URL is a web address that tells the
browser where to go to find a specific webpage.
– Components of a URL:
• Protocol: Shows the type of connection, e.g., http or https.
• Domain Name: The main name of the website, like
www.example.com.
• Path: Points to a specific page or file on the website.
– Example: https://www.example.com/about
• URL Features for Safe Browsing
– HTTP vs HTTPS: HTTPS is secure, while HTTP is not
recommended for sensitive data.
– Domain Name: Helps you identify legitimate
websites; e.g., “example.com”
– Tip for Beginners: Always check for “https” in
URLs when entering sensitive information.
How Browsers and URLs Work Together
Step 1: You type a URL in the browser’s
address bar.
Step 2: The browser translates the URL to
find the web server.
Step 3: The server sends the webpage data
back to the browser.
Step 4: The browser displays the webpage
for you to see and interact with
Common Internet Services Accessed via
Browsers
Search Engines: Help you find information
(e.g., Google, Bing).
Social Media: Connect and share with others
(e.g., Facebook, Twitter).
Email Services: Send and receive messages
(e.g., Gmail, Yahoo).
Video Streaming: Watch movies and shows
online (e.g., YouTube, Netflix)
What is a Search Engine?
Definition: A search engine is a tool that helps you
find information on the Internet by entering
keywords or phrases.
Popular Examples: Google, Bing, Yahoo,
DuckDuckGo.
Purpose: Provides quick access to millions of
websites, images, videos, and other types of
content.
How it Works: You type in what you want to search,
and the search engine shows you a list of relevant
websites and resources.
Features of Search Engines
Search Bar: Type keywords, questions, or phrases here to
search.
Search Results: Links to websites, images, videos, news,
etc., related to your search.
Filters: Options to narrow down results by images,
videos, news, maps, and more.
Suggested Searches: Related searches or “People also
ask” sections to help you find more information.
Safe Browsing Features: Some search engines have
settings to filter out inappropriate content (e.g.,
SafeSearch).
Tip for Beginners: Start with specific keywords or phrases
to get the best results
