Internet ProtocolPresentation
By Aqsa Javed
What is IP/TCP?
• IP itself is like a postal system
• IP stands for Internet protocol
• It allows you to address a package and
drop it in the system, but there is no direct
link between sender and receiver
• Protocol is the pre-defined way that
someone wants to use a service talk with
that service. The “someone” could be a
person but usually it is a computer server or
web browser
Basically…
• In simple terms is a language that
enables communication between
computers
• A set of rules (protocol) that defines how
two computers address each other and
send data to each other
• Is a suite of protocols named after the
two most important protocols TCP and
IP but includes other protocols such as
UDP, RTP, etc.
Purpose Of IP
• The Internet protocol defines the
basic unit of data transfer(IP
DATAGRAM)
• IP software performs the routing
function
Datagrams
Each datagram has two components
Header Data
Packets (Datagrams)
• Need a standard needs of communication
between devices
• Can’t communicate if speaking two
different languages
• Therefore we have a concept called
“Protocol”
ORIENTATION
 IP is network layer protocol

IP service
IP supports the following services
• Unicast
• Broadcast
• multicast
IP address
Every machine on the internet has unique identifier
number, called an IP address.
A typical address looks like 217.27.61.741
To make it easier for us humans to remember , IP
address are usually expressed in decimal
Format as dotted decimal number like the one above,
but computer communicates in binary form
