This document outlines the topics and scope of an LGBT studies course covering sexuality and sexual identity in American history from the 17th century to the late 20th century. The course will examine how concepts of sexual identity, gender roles, and gender identity developed within historical contexts and changed over time. It will look at what same-sex activities and experiences reveal about American society. Sources will include court cases, legislation, diaries, letters, sermons, novels, and other materials to understand behaviors, perspectives, and self-concepts during different time periods before modern notions of sexual orientation emerged. The course will take a chronological approach starting in Early Modern Europe and tracing influences on attitudes in colonial North America.
