VIOLENCE vs. AGGRESSION

Aggression   Refers to range of behaviors which
             can be described as intimidating or
             threatening to others.




             Refers to any incident, in which a
Violence     person is abused, threatened or
             assaulted in circumstances relating
             to their work.

The Law and your Rights
Four (4) Basic Premise:
1. It is unacceptable to be abused, threatened,
   or assaulted whilst at work.
2. We disagree on the course of action we
   should take especially when the action
   require the use of physical force against
   another.
3. The general principle we follow in the DUTY
   of CARE to our client as well as to our
   colleagues may bring us in conflict with our
   desire to protect ourselves whilst under
   threat or actual physical assault.

4. The use of physical force to fend off or
physically intervene with our client or any
other individual must always be the LAST
RESORT when other communication skills
failed.

Six (6)COMMON LAW
1. Right to protect themselves from attack.

2. To act in the defense of another person.

3. To prevent crime.

4. To arrest offenders and if necessary to use
   force on another.

COMMON LAW
5. If no more force is use than is reasonable to
repel the attack such force is not unlawful, and
no crime is being committed.

6. Circumstances may justify pre-emptive strike

Six (6)reasonable factors and
             circumstances
1. No other alternative than to use physical force.
2. Gender of both the self and attacker.
3. Size and physical strength of both parties.
4. The perceived threat.
5. Any specialist skills.
6. The threat of or use of weapon.

RISK TAKING Q’s
TASK
Do you occasionally have to give people information that may upset or
annoy them.
Do you spend time working alone when you may be untraceable.
Do you handle a valuables or medication.
Do you have to say ‘no’ to people on occasions.

PEOPLE

Do you encounter who may be under stress.
Do you encounter people who may be under the influence of either drugs
or alcohol.
Do you work with people who may be suffering from mental illness.
Has the person a previous history of threats or physical aggression.

PLACES

Do you work in an environment that is accessible to members of the
public.
Do you work in an environment where it would be difficult to gain
assistance if required.
Are you responsible for opening up or closing your workplace,
including security.
Do you have access to an alarm system of any description.


TIME

Do you often work outside ‘normal’ working hours.
Do you often start or leave during the hours of darkness.
Are your working hours sometimes unpredictable.
