Welcome to Sociology!
What is sociology and why should we study it?
What are some of the fundamental concepts, theories and
trends in the discipline?
Which fundamental theory, or theories, am I drawn to and
why?
Can sociology be used to effect social change in a
sustainable way?
How do/can I as an individual use sociological concepts
and theories in my everyday life.

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS
POINTS = 80
REFLECTIVE WRITING
For each chapter there will be one pre-writing on the
selected topics. Each writing is worth a total of 10
points. You have the option of not participating in 2
of the chapter writings at least two days apart. If you
choose to write on every chapter, those extra points
will be counted towards your final grade.
DISCUSSION BOARDS
POINTS = 80
For each chapter there will be a selection of topics for discussion
posted on the moodle site. You are required to post one original
response to AT LEAST one topic and respond to at least TWO
classmates’ original posts. Your posts must reflect an understanding
of the course material to that point in the course and must be
written, in most cases, using appropriate academic language and
must be respectful of the views of others. Disagreement is
encouraged, disrespect is not. You have the option of not
participating in TWO chapter discussions at least two days apart. If
you choose to participate in all ten discussions, those extra points
will be counted towards your final grade.
MID TERM
POINTS = 30
The mid tem will consist of two take home essay
questions, to be discussed at a later date.
FINAL
POINTS = 50
The mid tem will consist of multiple choice/true
false questions and two essay questions, to be
discussed at a later date.
RESEARCH PROJECT
POINTS = 10
This project is designed to both be entertaining
and educational. Details will be posted on the
moodle site at the beginning of the second week
of the course.

  • #2: Hello and welcome to Sociology 1, Intro to Sociology through the College of Alameda. My name is Susan Ingram and I will be your instructor over the next three week. This is a 3 week course and we have a lot of information to cover in a short aount of time. Please don’t worry… I will work with you to assist you in being successful in the course.
  • #3: SOC 1 is worth 3 units and meets from Tuesday, May 27th until Friday June 13th… don’t let that end date spook you… Friday the 13th has always been my lucky day! Our final exam will be due on the 13th by 9:00 PM, but more about that later. I am happy to answer your questions at anytime and I am more then willing to adjust the course schedule if needed.
