Editor's Notes

  • #6: Watch the video “Inside the White House: The Garden” with Michelle Obama at www.whitehouse.gov/. Research the history of vegetable gardening at the White House. Begin with Thomas Jefferson’s development of crop diversity and crop rotation techniques. Include the Victory Garden movement initiated by Eleanor Roosevelt and the vegetable garden developed by Michelle Obama in your study. Create an original poem or jingle on some aspect of vegetable gardening. In the ad, comment on the impact of vegetable gardening on a healthy dietary regime. The advertisement could be time specific, i.e., an ad about a vegetable that might have grown in Eleanor Roosevelt’s Victory Garden. Share the ads and an accompanying recipe with your classmates. Have a “Vegies Make Good Eats” day on the day of the ad previews. Extended assignment: each student prepares a recipe featuring the vegetable in their ad for their family; plant a vegetable garden at school; volunteer activity – plant a community vegetable garden.
  • #8: Add a creative border, convert your document to a pdf file, and post on the class blog.
  • #9: Conduct simultaneous weather studies with students around the world online through epals for a period of one month. Further sites to explore for graphics, sound or video clips, images: The Weather Channel (www.weather.com/), Accu Weather (www.acuweather.com/), and weather Online (www.weatheronline.com/). Also look at Dan’s Wild Wild Weather Page (a television meteorologist’s interactive site) at www.whnt19.com/kidwx/. A connection to digital weather instruments from Oregon Scientific Weather Stations and Atomic Clocks is located at http://www.weatherconnect.com/. Oregon Scientific makes: (1) Rain Gauage with Indoor/Outdoor thermometer for $39.99; and (2) Full Wireless Weather Station with wind sensor, rain gauage, temperature-humidity sensor, and two additional optional channels for $119.95. This weather station measures and displays: temperature (indoor/outdoor), humidity, dew point, wind speed, wind direction, wind chill, barometric pressure, daily/cumulative rainfall/precipitation, and UV index (optional addition).
  • #14: Use GraphPower, Database, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Multimedia-authoring to collect and present data. Set up a discussion board (?) on Facebook.
