Learning from the Masters: The
relationship between sport and
exercise in later life
Second seminar in the ESRC Seminar Series:
More of the same is not enough: New
directions in ageing and physical activity
#ESRCAgePA
Welcome and introduction
What is this seminar about? And why?
 Discovery of benefits of PA for health and ageing
 Particular focus on population ageing - alarmist?
 Drive for mainstreaming PA led by life and behavioural sciences
 Challenges previous (and current?) expectations about how to
grow old – New norms? New obligations? New opportunities?
 Responsibility for adapting to new norms devolved to individuals
 Masks at least two things: complexity but also those who already
do it, including barriers
 Role of the Social Sciences in addressing this complexity
 Asking people themselves
 Complex boundary between sport and physical activity
Previous research on Master athletes
Rylee Dionigi identified pathways to Masters Sport:
Sport 'Continuers', 'Rekindlers' and 'Late Bloomers’
Josefin Eman showed how Master athletes
‘invented’ a new age category to make sense of
their own ageing: capability age
James Bowness has identified the issue of risk as a
key element of Masters sport: taking and managing
risk
