Implementing SIMVote2009 Best Practices on SIMElection Programs
Implementation of SIMVote Step 1:  Check with your school district Do you need board approval to implement SIMVote? Formally as an action item? Informally through someone like an Assistant Superintendent Whose support do you need? What logistical issues need to be addressed? Who needs a copy of the curriculum?
Implementation of SIMVote Step 2: Key Decisions Which schools/teachers might want to participate? Student instructors or classroom teachers instruct? Conduct a SIMElection? Which election will you cover?
Implementation of SIMVote Step 3: Presentations and Trainings Who could benefit from a presentation? How many copies of curriculum do you need? What challenges do you predict coming from staff?
Implementation of SIMVote Step 4: Project Coordinators Who will serve as coordinator? What will the duties be? What support will they need? Select and train student instructors List of students missing class to instruct Transportation coordination Notify teachers and attendance office of any student instructor dates Know when 5 th  grade sessions will take place What copying needs to happen? Letters to parents? Advance notice, and offer to help with any inconveniences caused to others by SIMVote.
Implementation of SIMVote Step 5: Transportation Is transportation available? What account can fund transportation if necessary? Who is the contact? Do you have the bell schedules and calendars for all schools? Create a lesson schedule – make sure teachers and attendence know that student teachers are excused Direct line to elementary school secretaries Mode of communication? – email, phone, snail mail
Implementation of SIMVote Step 6: Materials When is next election? What is on the ballot? What do you want on the student ballot? How many ballots, voting machines, and booths do you need List of students (registered voter list) Voter guide Timelines
Implementation of SIMVote Step 7: Student-Instructors How many do you need? Teams of 2 or 3 Where will you recruit? Use an application When will you hold tryouts
Implementation of SIMVote Step 8: Welcome Orientation Have snacks! Before/after school (not at lunch) Invite administration, Arsalyn or Mobilize.org staff to the welcome
Implementation of SIMVote Step 9: Student Training Sessions Copies of curriculum Classroom management Dress Code  Teaching Techniques Practice time for teams
Implementation of SIMVote Step 10: Parent Involvement Sample letter to notify parents Allow parent volunteers during lesson/SIMElection Send home materials Use HS SIMPoll Workers when possible

Who is in charge of the media?  Notify principals and business offices about photographers coming Who will send letter to 5 th  grade students
Implementation of SIMVote Step 12: SIMElection Who will monitor the polls? What times will the polls be open? Where and how will you post results [next day] Who will take pictures? Send all results/media to your district office
