Appliance Test and TaggingPart 1IntroductionSeries presented by Acme Test and Taggingacmett.com.au
The information provided in this series is general in nature and is intended to be used as an introduction only.Although test and tagging is performed in many countries, this presentation highlights it’s use in Australia and New Zealand.Series presented by Acme Test and Taggingacmett.com.au
What is Test and Tagging?
Test and Tagging is the process of inspecting and testing electrical appliances to determine if they are electrically safe for personal use.
It is also referred to as lead taggingor portable appliance testing.
The official term isin-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
It is performed on electrical appliances that connect to the electricity supply by a flexible power cord with a connecting device, typically a plug.
The general rule-of-thumb is;if you plug it in, it should be tested.
Appliances that are "hard-wired" direct into the building’s power circuit are not required to be test and tagged. For example: ceiling lights, heavy plant, many types of air conditioners etc.
The Standard AS/NZS 3760 specifies procedures for the safety inspection and testing of low voltage appliances.Copies of this Standard can be purchased throughSaiGlobal
The test and tag process involves two key steps.Visually inspecting the appliance, lead and connecting device for any obvious damage, missing components etcElectrically testing the appliance
Approximately 90% of all defects are established during the inspection.
Should the appliance fail either the visual inspection or electrical testing, it must be labelled to indicate it is defective and be withdrawn from service pending repair or being discarded.
Should the appliance pass both the visual inspection and electrical testing, a durable, non-reusable, non-metallic tag shall be fitted to the appliance, typically on the flexible supply lead about one hand span from the plug.
Why Test & Tag?
The reason we test and tag is;for the safety of persons using the appliance(s)for the proper discharge of the obligations of employers and employees, as listed in legislation covering occupational health and safety matters.
Consideration must be given to localLegislations, Industry Standards and/or Codes of Practicethat may have different requirements and the better practice should always be adopted.
Test and tagging has always been, and always will be, about reducing the risk of workers and other people being injured or killed due to electric shock from faulty appliances.
