Before cognitive psychology came to be, there were two practices that let to what is known as the
cognitive revolution. These two practices are known as introspection and behaviorism. These two
practices are very different in the theory behind them as well as the problems behind them.
Introspection was performed by asking people to "'look within' to observe and record the content of
our own mental lives and the sequence of our own experiences (Cognition, p. 9)." This leads us to
the biggest problem of introspection, not being a scientific way of studying the human mind.
Another limitation of introspection is that some thoughts that individuals have are unconscious
which makes them unable to be studied (Cognition). Because of these limitations, the practice of
behaviorism came about. Behaviorists took the limitation of lack of scientific study to heart and
decided that the mind must be studied by observing individuals' behaviors. Behaviorism had its own
limitations as well. One such limitation is that the ways people act and feel are guided by how they

Four preliminary questions are useful to frame philosophical analysis of introspection. First, in what
does introspection consist? In general terms, introspection is a way to recognize, to learn or to be
aware of our own current and recently past mental states and processes, and to self–attribute those

Schemas are detailed cognitive networks stored in long term memory. They organise and relate
information from past experiences to represent an individual's construal of different objects and

According to Markus (1977) these guide self–related actions and behaviour, and form self–concept.
This knowledge is important for improving oneself, building self–esteem, and striving for success
(Suls & Wheeler, 2011). The initial development of schemas and self–awareness is thought to occur
in childhood; detailed in Piaget's Stage Theory (Piaget, 1976). Rather than exploring child cognitive
development, this essay will discuss some of the theories of individual self–schema development
and some ways they are maintained under threat.
Self–Discrepancy Theory
The first approach to self–schema development we will evaluate is Self–Discrepancy Theory (SDT)
(Higgins, 1987). In this theory self–schemas develop to drive the actual self (who somebody is now)
towards the ideal self (who somebody wants to be) and the ought self (who somebody should be
according to others). Reflected appraisals build a network of the actual self, and this knowledge is
used to move towards the ideal and ought selves. Discrepancies between actual and ideal result in

made more sense that this theory could be used to test hypotheses and form data. However,
psychology is about more than just observing the physical stimulus and a person's response to it. An

Daniel Dennett looks to quine qualia, or completely disprove their existence, in "Quining Qualia."
He is successful in creating a theoretical framework by which many intuitive arguments for qualia
can be struck down. Because of his success, an argument from introspection is difficult to make;
Dennett seems to successfully refute many of the arguments given by intuition or folk psychology. I
will adopt Eugene Park's criticism in critiquing Dennett, showing that an argument from
introspection can provide some insight into how qualia might exist. Park argues that relying on
memory comparison is incomplete, and unfairly eliminates direct apprehensibility.

So, should psychology study things and hypothesize about things that are not directly observable?
Before I begin my argument I want to point out that the word "psychology" is the combination of
two terms – study (ology) and soul (psyche), or mind. The derivation of the word from Latin gives it

Human motivations, emotions, thoughts and behaviours are messy, unpredictable and every human
being is a unique bit of mystery. Maybe it shouldn't be a question of 'can the experiment be
replicated in the laboratory' because we don't live in labs. I believe a more pragmatic approach will
eventually answer many of the questions psychology struggles with and that's also what I think
MacDougall was advocating in his argument.
Watson, as a leading behaviourist of the day advocated for complete rejection of mental phenomena
and the concept of consciousness had no place in science b/c mental phenomena cannot be directly

Dante created this foundational text for the European literary imagination that sparked a stream of
literary creation (1205). According to the Middle Ages definition of a comedy, it must have a
narrative structure that begins in misery and ends in happiness, it should contain a range of styles

Graham Hitch, have proposed a model in how to explain the working memory system. They have

Functionalism: A Psychological Analysis
Functionalism is the philosophy of science to which Behaviourism belongs too. According to
Farrell, p.g. 364 "For functionalists, mental states had to be understood in terms of the functions that

The first big hurdle is getting into medical school, whether this means getting a good score on the
MCAT or gaining clinical experience. Dr. Grande told us, "Do something challenging or something
that you don't like. Get dirty." Frankly, this scared me. It is hard to go out of your comfort zone and
