iOS1 – the iPhone is born 
Year: 2007 
- No official name were given on its 
initial release; 
- Apple simply stating the iPhone runs 
a version of Apple's desktop 
operating system, OS X 
Most important features: 
- user interface 
- software keyboard: was perhaps the first genuinely usable keyboard that could be typed on 
with your fingers
iOS2 – Apps 
Year: 2008 
- Apple introduced the App Store to 
iOS. 
Most important features: 
-Apple Store, 3rd-party apps 
-iOS SDK (Software Development Kit):
iOS3 – New features 
Year: 2009 
- huge list of functionality and 
apps updates 
Most important features: 
-Cut copy paste functionality 
-Push notifications for 3rd party apps 
-USB & Bluetooth tethering 
-Find my iPhone 
-Spotlight search: research of content across contacts, emails, calendars, notes etc.
iOS4 – Multitasking 
Year: 2010 
Apple's implementation of 
multitasking meant that the iPhone 
would have been less vulnerable 
from apps taking up too much 
memory in the background which 
means a better use of the battery. 
Most important features: 
- Retina display: Apple added support for the iPhone 4's Retina Display and faster 
processor, giving developers even more ways to create high quality apps. 
- FaceTime videochat 
- Personal Hotspot
iOS5 – Siri 
Year: 2011 
Siri replaces Voice Control with a 
"virtual assistant" that is able to do 
more than just connect calls. 
Most important features: 
-Notification center 
-No PC required when activating a new 
device 
-iMessage / iCloud
iOS6 – Goodbye Google Maps 
Year: 2012 
Most important features: 
-Apple Maps 
-Passbook: collecting rewards cards, payment types, tickets, coupons, boarding passes, 
and anything else with a barcode in one place
iOS7 
Year 2013 
Most important features: 
- Visual overhaul: flattened graphics, colorful gradients, and transparencies 
- Control Center: is Apple's version of the quick-settings toggles found on Android 
phones 
- Touch ID / New swiping gesture that makes navigating around apps much easier

-Apple release the version new version of the SDK, 8.0 which includes: 
- 4000 new APIs 
- Touch ID API – open to third-party apps

- Camera API – third-party camera apps can have precise control over 
exposure, focus, and white balance 
- Apple acquired testflight and app will be available in iOS8 
- More power to third-party browsers and new features for safari (WebGL)

220,000 stores already have tech in place 
to accept Apple Pay. You’ll be able to use 
the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus at your local 
Macy’s, Whole Foods Market, Nike, 
Subway, McDonalds, Disney, and, of 
course, Apple stores.

- New Processor: The new A8 processor is 25 per cent faster 
- Battery: slighly improved, especially thanks to iOS8 
- New sensor functionalities: It can tell when you're cycling, walking, and 
running. It can also estimate distance and can tell how many steps you're 
running and how far you've gone. It can also work out elevation using the 
barometer. 
-Connectivity: 4G gets a boost to 150Mb/s from 100. Also Wi-Fi speed is 
improved 3x 
- Touch ID 
- NFC (near field contact) chip 
- Improved camera (improved slow motion video, from 120 to 240 fps) 
Price: iPhone6 from £539 for the 16GB version
