TANK LEVEL MONITORING RESULTS (1)
JUNE 201814
ROLLING STOCK - ENGINEERING DEPT
WATER LEVEL PER CARBODY
trainset #720 R1 R2 R3 R5 R6 R7 R8
Mean level 84% 80% 79% 81% 84% 76% 70%
Minimum level 47% 15% 13% 34% 35% 25% 0%*
Conclusions (1)
 Overall mean level of water tank is 80 %. This could allow to suppress
unnecessary replenishments.
 Low level still exist, can be and were flagged thanks to monitoring,
before assigning the TGV on a commercial journey.
–
TANK LEVEL MONITORING RESULTS (2)
JUNE 201815
ROLLING STOCK - ENGINEERING DEPT
WATER LEVEL OVER TIME
 Water consumption vary
significantly depending on
toilet’s location.
This was expected.
 Water replenishment vary
significantly depending on
toilet’s location.
This was less expected !
Conclusions (2)
 Replenishments being charged, but not “full-filled” !  contract management

“QUITE THE SAME THING”…
1st BUSINES CONCEPT
Real-time knowledge of fuel level
can improve operations
DIESEL ENGINES – FUEL VOLUMES DELIVERED
Basic ambition
Streamline refuelling
Queueing at the gas station at rush hour
KEY FACTS FROM FIRST STUDY
Significant consumption at standstil
 engines left idling 65% of operating time
1
2
3 Costs due to too-frequent refuelling

…QUITE, BUT NOT THE SAME THING
BACK TO USER’S NEEDS
USER’S TARGET
Engine fit for service
Fuel level
Match with expected consumption
(scheduled journey & load)
Battery status OK for engine start
Sand level
Sufficient for journey under current
weather condition
Water level Windshield-cleaning system ready
Fuel level measurement needs to be
 Always available – especially whilst running  LPWAN network won’t do
 Precise  the original equipment gauge is not sufficient
 Done in-motion  liquid movements inside tank have to be dealt with
Operations need more than fuel !

STEP BY STEP WITH ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS
58 coaches fitted, commencing October 2016
 Phase 0 - March 2017: Test and development of alerting algorithm
Train-ground transmission and diagnostic system run on demo platform
 Phase 1 – March-May 2017: Semi-automated system
Groud-based platform alerts are sent to supervision centre, to be analysed.
 Phase 2 – May-June2017: Automated system
Train-based informations are analysed automatically by the platform. Supervisor forwards
pertinent alerts to the train manager.
 Phase 3 from June 2017: End-to-end automated system
Alerts are send directly to the train manager, who takes appropriate actions and gives
feedback to the supervision centre.
Feedback and incremental improvement of the system ~ 1 year
 2018: Industrialization on 350+ coaches to be launched
