This document describes an Android-based portable hand sign recognition system. The system uses a custom-designed data glove with flex sensors to detect hand gestures. A microcontroller converts the analog sensor data to digital and sends it via Bluetooth to an Android mobile device. The goal is to help deaf and mute people communicate through sign language translation to text or voice on a mobile device. The system aims to improve on previous vision-based sign language recognition approaches by using a wearable sensor-based method.
