IRREVERSIBLE
The majority of the camera shots in this sce
are long shots and unusual shots, where we s
the victim/protagonist travelling the r
hallway. The image of a the protagonist walki
down the hall in this medium/long shot, makes h
look extremely vulnerable and small when compar
with her surroundings and the lack of people. H
attire of a tight-fitted silk slip also creat
an immense amount of weakness and vulnerabilit
not to mention the colour contrast of the sensu
red walls, which reinforces the sexual act a
the danger that she’s faced with; this
directly compared with the white dress connoti
purity and innocence. The long shots of t
corridors also display a level of uncertainty
you never know who/what is going to come rou
the corner, allowing the audience to g
emotionally attached to our protagonis
CAMERA WOR
Mid shots were used regularl
throughout the feature film t
establish a close relationshi
between the protagonist an
the audience. the use of th
camera following her as sh
walks down the corridor, an
just showing her back to th
audience, firstly gives th
effect that someone i
following her (although n
eerie music was used t
indicate this) but also t
place the audience in th
protagonists shoes and to se
what she sees. This creates
realistic experience for th
audience
The lighting in the scene is very lo
key and dingy, however at the same time
when compared with other horror films
this gory scene is considered relativel
bright and challenges most horro
lighting conventions. Other camer
movements consist of slowing down whe
the protagonist slows down/speeding u
when she does and generally follows her
not having a shot where she’s not in it
Interestingly there isn’t any cuts i
this scene therefore the action isn’
dissected and it is even more horrifi
as it makes it even more realistic. Th
way that the camera moves is clear t
see that it is on a tripod. I feel tha
this is very useful as it allows th
audience to be completely focused on th
sexual assault rather than be distracte
by a shaky-cam
In this scene in Irreversible, ther
is nothing but diegetic sound. Ther
was no music added in for emotiona
effect/response. This therefor
challenges the typical eerie musi
commonly heard in a horror film. Yo
can hear certain creaks as sh
travels down the corridor, as wel
as her footsteps, which is a commo
trait in horrors. What makes thi
scene worse than most other horro
scenes is that for over fiv
minutes, all that is heard is
woman’s cries as she is being raped
There is virtually n
speech/dialogue in this scene, jus
the panting of the victim as she i
violently raped, by the antagonist
This si extremely unsettling for th
audience, as even if yo
SOUND
EDITING
The editing of this scene is
quite naturalistic, and from
what I could see didn’t
contain that many (if not
any) cuts, to try and show
the flowing scene. I assume
that with the minimal cuts,
it allows the audience to not
be distracted with close ups
etc and can be fully focused
on the rape act. I feel that
this was extremely effective.
