Editor's Notes

  • #4: Speaker notes: Our mission is to democratize professional technology learning At Pluralsight, we are truly obsessed with learning, and we believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn the most in-demand skills. We teach over 1 million learners in 150+ countries. We help businesses solve their biggest challenges and address your most-critical skills gaps. But how did we get here? ……(transition)
  • #5: I started our as an individual who was told that computers were not something that would be possible for me as I was not in the top class of Maths, when I was at school. When I told my parents they were mortified that I was being hindered from pursuing something that would be so critical to my future. So my Dad went out and got me a Commadore64 which allowed me to learn programming. My fist programme was a bank reconciliation programme that I put an Easter Egg in so that when my Dad put his bank statements in he could see where he was financially but if he put a cheque through for my Mum it came up as ‘Overdrawn’ I obviously thought it was funny but soon recognised that he didn’t. Over the years I have put myself through school and training and have headed up various teams and departments in the Learning and Technology field, culminating in heading up a new team at the Houses of Parliament as Online Services Manager. Today I work for one of the best Online education companies in the world, Pluralsight, where we help people learn all the technology they want to be better and smarter than yesterday.
  • #6: Speaker notes: To talk about Pluralsight as it is today, it’s good to know a little bit about how we started. In 2004, Pluralsight was founded as classroom-based training, but over time, we recognized Instructor Led Training had its limits. In 2008, we moved our library completely online to address the global demands for tech learning and made it available for members whenever and wherever they needed it. As we did this, the consumption of our content increased dramatically, and has done so ever since. We’ve also made some key content and product acquisitions to continue growing out learning solutions. The line on this slide shows an increase in courses viewed by our subscribers as the library grew. We’ve acquired companies who have allowed us to extend our content breadth (like IT, OpenSource, Creative, Engineering) or enhance our technology to provide a more powerful learning experience (Assessments, In-browser coding, Learning Paths, Mentoring). This growth and an obsession over providing the most powerful learning experience has helped us become an industry leader……(transition) -------------------------- Peepcode and Tekpub - Open source training resources TrainSignal – an IT- focused training resource that is now home to our Chicago office Digital-Tutors – a creative-focused training resource, from 3D animation to web design, that is now home to our Oklahoma City Office We also added industry-leading assessment technology through our Smarterer acquisition and on-demand mentoring technology through HackHands. Both of these features are being integrated into the platform, which I’ll talk about shorlty. Code School was one of our more recent content acquisitions. It offers training for both existing and aspiring developers, and uses in-browser coding challenges to teach topics like Ruby, JavaScript and HTML. --------------------------
  • #7: Speaker notes: …The trusted learning provider for companies across the globe and across industries. These are just a few of the Fortune 100 and industry leading organizations we work with today. Others include…….(transition)
  • #8: Speaker notes: A huge part of why so many people learn with Pluralsight is the quality of our author network. We have over 800 authors who are industry experts, tech and creative leaders and many of whom are certified masters of their skills. Our authors create around 80 courses and over 250 hours of training a month while working in the industry, teaching and speaking, or working full-time for us. Our royalty model assures we can attract and keep top talent. The authors are motivated to continue to produce high quality content because the more the course gets viewed, the more they earn. Our subscribers are the beneficiaries as they get to learn only from the industries best. So how have we taken all of this amazing content and organized it?.......(transition)
  • #9: Speaker notes: Our training is focused on leading technology professions and skills. Software development IT Ops Creative Business or professional development that supports technical skills and employee personal growth Data Architecture and Construction Manufacturing and Design This focus on critical technology skills provides your organization with an immense learning resource, with content that is broad, deep, and relevant….(transition)
  • #11: In the field we all know that Training doesn’t mean Learning and we need to be able to apply what we have been trained on to actually learn a subject.
  • #12: The tried and tested theory is we do a training course, whether online or ILT and we then need to apply it. Once we have applied the training we then reflect on what went well and what didn’t go so well so that we can then review. The review aspect reinforces what we have been trained on and it turns into learning. This cycle is an important one as we can only say we know a subject after going through this process.
  • #13: With different training options available available, it’s also important to know what your tech learners actually want to use or learn from best. In a study from HBR, tech pros prefer the self study or independent research method – by over double to the next preferred method. Looking at the way our learners want to learn is an important aspect of how we decide what solution to purchase. HBR research shows that self study is the most efficient way for an IT professional to learn what they need when they need it, but we can also see that there are a multitude of other resources available to us.
  • #15: Structured learning allows us to capitalise on the need and to reinforce the learning nature of the company by allocating dedicated time for the learner. When we go to a class we are effectively taken out of the workspace and given time, how many companies do the same for learners when they are studying Online?
  • #18: New slide When applying structured learning we see people being able to instantly respond, get higher quality, learn new skills faster and be able to have their peers to bounce ideas off of. Speaker notes: Using Pluralsight, 88%, use Pluralsight to more effectively troubleshoot – helping them get trusted answers, get back to work and keep project timelines on track. 71% of our user base, both learners and skills development leaders, rated Pluralsight training better than classroom training the have taken or provided. And these skills are being applied quickly. 55% of learners apply their new skills or knowledge within one week of learning them – that’s a quick return on their learning investment.
