ISIS And Its Impact
In India
What is ISIS
• The Islamic state which was previously known as Islamic
state of Iraq and Levant .
• It is an unrecognized state and jihadist group.
• It claims authority over all the Muslims across world and
wants to bring all the Muslim inhabited region under its
direct political control.
• It begins its territory in the Levant region , which includes
Jordan, Israel , Palestine , Lebanon , Cyprus and an area in
southern turkey that includes hatay.
• The group has been officially designated as a foreign
terrorist organization USA , UK , Canada , Australia ,Saudi
Arabia , UN .
• The group in its original form was composed of and
supported by a variety of Sunni insurgent groups , including
its predecessor organizations , al Qaeda , Islamic state of Iraq
and many more.
Growth of Isis
• Isis grew significantly as an organization owing
to its participation in Syrian civil war and the
strength of its leader , Abu bark al Baghdadi.
• Economic and political discrimination against
Iraqi Sunnis since the fall of Sadddam Hussein
also helped to gain its support
At the height of the Iraq war its forerunner enjoyed
a significant presence in the Iraqi governess
• In the ongoing Syrian civil war Isis has a large
presence in the Syrian governess
• Isis is known for its harsh interpretation of wahhabi
Islam and its brutal violence , which is directed at shia
Muslims and Christians in particular .
• It has least 4000 fighters in its ranks in Iraq who, in
addition to attacks on government and military targets
, have claimed the responsibility for attacks that have
killed thousands of civilians .
• Isis had close links with al Qaeda until 2014 but in
February of this year after an eight month power
struggle , all Qaeda cut all the ties with Isis because of
its brutality and notorious intractability
AIM
• ISIS original aim was to establish a caliphate in
the Sunni majority regions of Iraq . Following
its involvement in the Syrian civil war ,this
expanded to include controlling Sunni
majority areas of Syria. A caliphate was
proclaimed on 29 June 2014 , Abu bakr al
Baghdadi was named as its caliph
Ideology and beliefs
• Isis is an extremis group which follows al-Qaeda's
hard line ideology and adheres to global jihadists
principles .
• Isis emerged from the ideology of Muslim
brotherhood ,the world’s first Islamism group
dating back to the late 1920 in egypt, which
follows an extremes anti western interpretation
of Islam ,promotes religious violence and regards
those who do not agree with its interpretation as
infidels and apostates
• Isis ideology originates in the branch of modern
Islam that aims to return to the early days of Islam ,
rejecting later innovations in the religion which it
believes corrupt its original spirit .
• Sunni scholars says that Isis and related terrorist
groups are not Sunnis at all , but are saving as an
imperial anti Islamic agenda.
• Isis believe that only a legitimate authority can
undertake the leadership of jihad , and that the first
priority over other areas of combat ,such as fighting
against non Muslim countries , is the purification of
Islamic society.
GOAL
• From its beginning the establishment of a pure
Islamic state has been one of Isis's main goals.
• According to journalist Sarah Birke one of the
“significant differences between nursra front and
Isis is that ISIS “tends to be more focused on
establishing its own rule on conquered territory “.
While both groups share the ambition to build an
Islamic state ,ISIS is far more ruthless… carrying
out sectarian attacks and imposing sharpie law
immediately”.
• ISIS finally achieved its goal on 29 June 2014 ,
when it declared the territory Islamic state
which it occupied in Iraq and Syria a new
caliphate
• A video was released in which announced the
group intention to eliminate all modern
borders between Islamic middle eastern
countries.
Territorial Claims
• On 13 October 2006 the group announced the
establishment of the Islamic state of Iraq
,which claimed authority over Iraqi
governorates.
• In 2013 expansion of the group into Syria and
the announcement of the Islamic state of Iraq
and the Levant.
Finances
• Donation only 5% of their operating budget
• 20% generated through kidnapping ,extortion
racket and other activities.
• The organization worth US$2 billion , making
it richest jihadist group in world
Equipment
1. Surface to air stinger missiles
2. M198 howitzers
3. DShk guns mounted on gun
4. Self propelled guns and at least one scud
missile.
5. UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters and cargo planes.
6. Captured nuclear materials from Mosul
university in July 2014
Impact in India
• With new government focusing more on SAARC
nations ,it will be a tough for them to deal with
the countries like Afghanistan which will be
under danger with expansion of Isis
• India’s major crude oil provider countries are
under threat with Isis ,so any invasion in these
countries by Isis would directly affect India's
consumption of crude oil .It may lead to price rise
and weak the country’s economy.
• As proposed by the end of 2014 us troops will
leave Afghanistan and at present Afghanistan
troops are not trained enough to fight the
militants of Isis . So it will be a direct threat to
the Afghanistan . India can help Afghanistan
by following ways
• Providing military aid
• Providing equipment
• Training their troops
• Infrastructure development
so that Afghanistan can counter Isis militants.
MY VIEWS
1. Isis is now becoming a headache for the
world and with the acceleration it is
expanding it is a serious danger to the world
peace
2. Al Baghdadi has emerged as a new laden in
the world terrorism . To stop him should be
the priority of the UN.
3. With only single permanent member in
security council from Asia and increasing
terrorism , it is a point to be kept to reform
UN Security Council.
• Nato forces and UN Peacekeepers should
involve more in the matter of Isis invasion of
Iraq.
• With India’s oil import under danger India
should also participate and involve in the
matter of Isis and also rescue the Indians in
Iraq.
