- 2. Difference between vector and bitmap based image Vector images usually contain well defined curved and straight images that create an aesthetically pleasing creation. They are used more for illustrations that warrant specific detail. Bitmap images are mapped to a grid and are more suitable for ‘photo realistic’ images that require lots of colour, though sharpness is not always retained.
- 3. Difference between a GIF formatted file and a JPEG JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is used for compressing full colour digital images of natural things. GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) are platform independent images that will transfer across slow connections. They come in 8 bit format so can only show 256 colours.

Difference between an embedded graphic image and a linked graphic image in a Word or Powerpoint document A linked graphic is part of the source so when it is altered the source file is also altered An embedded graphic image is the default setting and when altered does not change the source file. Microsoft Word shows the changes when an image is imported into it, the original picture is saved but it does not change the original file.
- 5. A ‘colour palette' A colour palette is all the different shades that is involved in a picture They are displayed in shade boxes and can be used to specify the different variations of colour used.
- 6. Lossless compression Lossless compression describes the ability for data to be recovered from a compressed file when the file has been uncompressed. Every bit of data can be completely restored in this compression and remains in the file
