ITP Spring Show....
now with cannolis!

             Sharon Panelo
                 May 2010
What is ITP?
The Interactive Telecommunications Program
(ITP) was founded at NYU in 1979 as the first
graduate program in alternative media.
Twice a year the students hold an open house
to showcase their work.
This was my spin through the
funhouse on May 10, 2011....
The way I see it, ITP is a hands-on approach to The Information Age:
a tactile approach to the digital -- and equal parts art gallery and
science fair.

                                        The fusion of online+offline was
a theme that jumped out at me.
                                          Other recurring ideas include...
Representation & Identity
Here I’m holding a camera in real-time wavy pixels.

Manipulating light, pixels, wooden
mirrors to (literally, figuratively)
explore personal reflections.
Surveillance culture
Who’s watching? This eye never sleeps.
Reactive touch

In this booth, Alexis makes a different colored lightshow
each time she pokes the furry thing. Texture & touch
remind me of new worlds opening from touchscreen
interfaces: from smartphones to beyond!
Remind us never to
    make babies together
                       (Me+Alexis)

Baseball helmets with webcams divide the wearer’s face into quadrants.
A separate controller allows you to splice the images onscreen to form
mutant genetic combinations with friends & strangers.
Whimsical explorations of
                  stereotypes and cultural
                                    norms

In this project, the student explored
the “Attraction According to
Height” function by strapping on a
pair of elevator shoes -- literally,
shoes that rose to the occasion via a
mechanical springboard lift.

As she went about her daily business in Manhattan, she was now able to grasp the top bar in
the subway, or reach the highest shelves at the grocery store. When men stopped her
on the street, she could literally elevate herself to see eye-to-eye.
My two
  favorite exhibits
although I’m pretty sure I didn’t
     get to see everything.

It was very crowded in there.
Headphones made of live terrariums

Put the glass globes on: hear crickets moving
among leaves and other sounds of nature.
Emotions in motion
                                                           AWKWARD

                                                          CONTROLLING

                                                           PASSIVE-
                                                          AGGRESSIVE

The artist created moving wall units to represent
   dominant characteristics of his friends.
Each unit had a kinetic-mechanical movement to
   represent the personality trait.
   * Much better in motion, I should have taken a video
Oh, I also ran into
Three awesome
    people!
#1: Krystal
         “Hands-on” Banzon

Fulbright scholar, Theatre Arts mogul, and all-around kick-ass lady,
Krystal Banzon is on my running fan-list of Awesome ITP Filipinas
(including Larilyn Sanchez, Phoebe Espiritu, et al...)
#2: Nien Lam
Watch out for Nien and his budding toy design empire, mwa-ha-ha!
Nien is co-producer of these original action figures with an augmented reality twist.
You stick a wooden block in ‘em and they reveal magical powers...
www.augtopia.com
Awesome Person #3
Web culture guru, author of Here Comes Everybody and other seminal
texts, Clay Shirky is also a professor at ITP. I actually didn’t see him
at the show, but I did run into him on the street afterwards, walking
down Broadway. He’s intimidatingly tall especially in a sharp suit.
If I were less shy, there’d be a photo of us here.
Two short videos
The dancing bits in the first clip
(Flux Continuum by Patricia Adler) would
make an excellent music video, or a Google
     Chrome Ad.

The second clip is another interactive light/
color wall. Many parts of the ITP show
reminded me of exhibits at the PS.1. Art
Museum in Queens... similar aesthetics and
     processes.
The end!

Epilogue: Cannolis!
PS: Italian pastries are the perfect antidote to the ITP experience.

We got your afterparty right here!
(Thanks Emily!)
                                                                  Sharon Panelo, 2010
                                                                  www.hellopanelo.com
Parting note:
Four other cool
    things
WASTEWALL:
Re-imagining waste (urine, rainwater,
algae) in a luxury bathroom setting.

Adib Dada
Black Jesus!
(Officially: “Shrine to the Black Nazareth”)

Alexis lights a candle at Krystal Banzon’s exhibit.

Photocells detect the lit candles, and “the frame rate of the video [a Good Friday
religious procession in the Philippines] speeds up and the color gets distorted,
emphasizing the frightening fanaticism of religious devotion.”
Running of the Bulls:
A retro arcade game of the Pamplona event, using
electromechanical relays, gears, switches, cardboard.
Greg Borenstein, Scott Wayne Indiana

                                       Retro-modern
Eye-tracking technology!

       A) Put on sunglasses, rigged with eye-movement
       tracking gadget.
       B) If you were a marketer, you would use this
to track “user eyeballs” on a web page, and to
identify where to place paid content like ads.
       C) At ITP, this technology is used to
EXPLODE VIRTUAL FRUIT. Focus your eye
on the bullseye target and the bananas will burst.
