International Standard Ballroom Dances
Ballroom Dance: Ballroom dancing is one of the most entertainingand elite stylesofdancing. In the
earlierdays, ballroom dance was onlyfor the privilegedclassof people,the socialitesif you must. This
style of dancing with a partner, originatedin Germany,but is now a popular act followedinvaried
dance styles.Today, the popularityof ballroom dance isevident,giventhe innumerable showsand
competitionsworldwide that revere dance,in all its form.
This dance includesmany otherstylessub-categorizedunderthis. There are many dance techniques
that have beendevelopedespeciallyinAmerica.The International Standard recognizesaround 10
stylesthat belongto the category of ballroomdancing, whereasthe Americanstyle has fewforms that
are differentfromthose includedunderthe International Standard.
Tango: It definitelydoestake two to tango and this dance also belongsto the American Style
category. Like all ballroom dancers, the male has to lead the female partner.The choreography of this
dance is what sets it apart from otherstyles,varying betweenthe International Standard, and that
which is American.
Waltz:The waltz is danced to melodic,slowmusic and is an equallybeautiful dance form. The waltz is
a graceful form of dance,that requiresfluidityand delicate movement.Whendancedby the
International Standard norms, thisdance is performedmore closelytowards each otheras compared
to the American Style.
Foxtrot: Foxtrot, as a dance style,givesa dancer flexibilitytocombine slowand fast dance steps
together.This social dance was named afterthe actor Harry Fox.
Viennese Waltz:Thisstyle of ballroomdance is basedon the original form ofthe waltz. There are
many versionsof this style of dance. It originatedin the latter period ofthe 18th century.
Quickstep:This style belongsto the International Style ofBallroom dancing which originatedin the
1920s. This dance includesmanysteps with quickmomentum. As seeninthe move 'Dance WithMe',
the Foxtrot isboth fun, and a dance that requiressynchronicity.
Cha-Cha-Cha:The cha-cha-cha simplycalledthe cha-cha is a type of Latin-Americandance which is
very rhythmic in itsappeal. This dance isenergeticwith slowmovementsas well.
Rumba: Thissensual dance is based on slowhip movement.Rumba belongs to the International
Standard as well as the American style.This dance is known for the beauty of the steps that are
coordinatedon a slow rhythm.
Samba: This beautiful andenergeticdance alsohas many forms. The stepsmay differin Samba that is
danced as per the ballroomstyle and the traditional style samba choreography.
Jive:This is yet anotherlivelyform of ballroomdance. This dance is also amongst the five dances that
belongto the Latin American dance styles.Seenas a dance style that had taken the 30s and 40s
(dancersmoved mostlyto jazz music) to perfectand pass on years later, still keepingitjust as upbeat
like it were back in the day.
Paso Doble:This livelydance isalso an International Latin dance style with lessemphasison hip
movement.The basic structure ofthis Latin dance is based on the sounds and the movementsusedin
Spanish bullfights.
