PREFACE                                       ,                                      The skills of an Industrial Designer...
                                              ... are the perfect mixture between the polyvalent engineering skills and the specific design skills.
                                              With these skills they design the products of the future. Each project trained some of these skills.


                                              The design methodology is the central part of the design-skills. Designers use many methods to
                            METHOD            develop a product from an idea.
                                              Industrial Designers are trained to use different creativity techniques to find new product- and
                           CREATIVE           process-ideas.
                                              An Industrial Designer is still an engineer. The knowledge of technology is essential to develop
                        TECHNOLOGY            producible.
                                              The choice and use of materials and production techniques is not only a matter of physical
                           MATERIAL           characteristics but also the emotional and sensitive aspects can make a difference.
                                              Prototyping is an essential part of the design process. With prototypes it is possible to
                         PROTOTYPE            communicate and validate product-ideas in a more realistic context.
                                              The relation between user and product, the context of use, is part of the necessary information to
                              USER            make a user-centered-design.
                                              The skill to define the correct look of a product makes the Industrial Designer an unique engineer
                              LOOK            using sketches, renders andCADtools.
                                              To compete with the market, the Industrial Designer has to know and use the the most recent
                           INDUSTRY           production processes, materials, etc.
                                              These skills were extensively trained during a four-year study at the University of West-

                                                                                   Design a product that helps
                                                                                   students while shopping.

                                                                                   First of all the user puts the
                                                                                   goods in the bag while walking
                                                                                   in the shop

                                                                                   Then the servant easily lays
                                                                                   down the bag at one side,
                                                                                   opens the zippers and scans
                                                                                   the goods while moving it
                                                                                   from the one to the other side.
                                                                                   After scanning just close the
                                                                                   zippers again to use it again as
                                                                                   a bag.

                                                                                   Afterwards, while moving or
                                                                                   (un)loading the bag, it is easy
                                                                                   to hang the bag wherever you
                                                                                   want.

LAMP I                ,                                                                             2006




                      This lampshade uses the heat
                      emitted from the lamp to
                      make the sculpture rotating.

                      This creates a beautiful
                      moving shadow pattern on
                      the front pannel and on the
                      wall behind.

                      The rotor also causes a good
                      air ventilation without the use
                      of an exra power supply. This
                      allows the designer to choose
                      for less and light materials.

                      This prototype is made from
                      carton.

                                                                  The assignment was to design
                                                                  a chocolate product spending
                                                                  a lot of attention to the
                                                                  functionality and look.

                                                                  The concept we created was
                                                                  to have a easu to use, cold,
                                                                  luxury chocolate fondue.This
                                                                  product is ideal for special
                                                                  events and walking dinners.

                                                                  We produced a hollow bar
                                                                  that can be easily filled with
                                                                  different tastes of fruit
                                                                  pudding.

PU-FOAM                                                                            ,                          2007



                                                                                   Searching a new market,
                                                                                   generating new ideas and
                                                                                   designing applications to use
                                                                                   the waste produced during the
                                                                                   production of PU-foam. This
                                                                                   assignment was in col-
                                                                                   laboration with Recticel.

                                                                                   The concept uses the waste as
                                                                                   a filling for curtains. These
                                                                                   curtains can better isolate
                                                                                   windows at night.

                                                                                   It should encourage people to
                                                                                   install a full extra insulation
                                                                                   package.

                                                                                   'This project was elected by
                                                                                   Recticel as one of the top three
                                                                                   projects.

PRO-CARTON                                                       ,                                         2007



                                                                 This product is the result of a
                                                                 contest of the company
                                                                 PRO-Carton. The assignment
                                                                 was to make a cardboard
                                                                 package for food.

                                                                 Within this context a package
                                                                 for wine was designed. It can
                                                                 be fold open to raise the wine
                                                                 bag. In this position it is easy
                                                                 to hold your glass under the
                                                                 tap.

                                                                 The wine package can easily
                                                                 be produced of 1 piece of
                                                                 carton and some standard
                                                                 folding processes.

                                                                 The result was nominated for
                                                                 the price in alcoholic drinks.

STAIRSTICK            ,                                                                                2008

                      The StairStick was develloped
                      as a redesign of a stairlift.

                      D u r i n g a s m a l l m a r ke t
                      research normal stairlifts
                      seemed to be expensive and
                      unpractical because they only
                      focus on one stair.

                      The StairStick helps older
                      people to climb every stair. It’s
                      basicly a walking stick but
                      there is a difference when
                      climbing a stair.Then a part of
                      the grip slides down. This part
                      is half a step high. Now the
                      user only has to raise his leg
                      half a step.

                      This small step can help a
                      majority of elderly people,
                      who struggle with stairs.

SMART

During a design theme week
about cars we designed this
new trunk concept for Smart.

We deleted the trunk lid. This
saves a lot of materials,
production processes and
costs of small cars like the
Smart. Making it an even more
ecologic car.

                                                                                   For this project the goal was to
                                                                                   design a non-electric powered
                                                                                   low cost barrier for cars

                                                                                   Here it was very important to
                                                                                   make a design allowing an
                                                                                   easy and cheap assembly.
                                                                                   Using as much as possible
                                                                                   standard available parts.

                                                                                   The system works with little
                                                                                   plates who can’t turn down
                                                                                   without using the handle
                                                                                   (=paying).

LAMP II                ,                                                                               2008




                       This ecological lamp is a
                       variation on a normal manual
                       wind-up lamp..

                       Because most of the time
                       when people use a flashlight
                       at home (cellar, attic, ...) they
                       need there hands.

                       With design of LAMP II it
                       becomes easy to put it down
                       wherever you want. The light
                       can shine in all possible
                       directions thanks to the
                       special shaped feet.

BETAFENCE             ,                                                                             2008


                      The project was in
                      cooperation with Betafence.
                      They make metal fences and
                      wanted to introduce a new
                      consumer product, using
                      these fences.

                      Therefore we started
                      designing a new material
                      using the strengths of the
                      fences. We invented a light
                      weight soft structure with
                      foam.The fence was used as a
                      die to create a structured
                      foam. The metal wires inside
                      made it possible to shape it in
                      many ways.

                      With this material we
                      developed a changeable 3D
                      carpet for children.

GLASSILED             ,                                                                             2008




                      Glassiled is a company that
                      has the knowledge to produce
                      led’s integrated in glass.

                      They asked us to develop
                      new products using this
                      technology.

                      The final product uses the
                      principle of total internal
                      reflection inside the glass.

                      This light, captured inside the
                      glass, reflects on the text
                      written with a fibreglass
                      composite so the text itself
                      starts to light.

INSECT-ROBOT                                                                       ,                       2008




                                                                                   Designing and drawing a robot
                                                                                   inspired by an insect. The
                                                                                   robot was drawn on A0 paper
                                                                                   by hand using materials as
                                                                                   pencils, markers and chalk.

                                                                                   Emodesign is an under-
                                                                                   estimated factor in the
                                                                                   industrial design sector.

                                                                                   Customers don’t buy the most
                                                                                   technical high-end products.
                                                                                   They decide their purchase
                                                                                   largely by emotions.

                                                                                   To understand the aspects of
                                                                                   emodesign we wrote a manual
                                                                                   with a lot of examples and
                                                                                   scientific information about
                                                                                   emotions, sences, perception,
                                                                                   ...

                                                                                   It is a basic guide for product
                                                                                   and interface designers.

                                                                 For the James Dyson Award
                                                                 we designed a new concept
                                                                 to open and close a door.

                                                                 People often have problems
                                                                 while handling doors. The
                                                                 most ergonomic movement
                                                                 is to push a door. This counts
                                                                 for opening the door but also
                                                                 for closing. So we designed a
                                                                 door that could easily be
                                                                 opened and closed by
                                                                 pushing. Another advantage
                                                                 of the newdoor is that it takes
                                                                 less space when opened.

                                                                 We made a 1:1 prototype and
                                                                 tested it in real life. For a

                      At Howest they have a special
                      location to store, test and
                      compare materials.

                      The goal was to set the
                      foundations to make it an
                      interactive classroom. The
                      entire group of about 30
                      students worked as one team.

                      Dries and I were responsible
                      for the interior arrangement
                      and flow. Among others we
                      designed a table that can be
                      used in many compositions
                      alone or in group.

                                              The first part was an intensive
                                              program with an inter-
                                              disciplinary team of students
                                              from all over Europe.The goal
                                              was to make a modular
                                              conference unit, integrating
                                              the newest technologies.

                                                                  PART2 >
                                              Jan De Paepe and I had to
                                              further develop the design of
                                              this project. The most
                                              important deliverable was a
                                              morphologic overview of
                                              alternatives for the specific
                                              functions of a conference
                                              system. With this overview it
                                              became possible to choose
                                              thousands of combinations.
                                              Accounting the latest trends,
                                              5 concepts were developed.

                      This project was all about
                      design for sustainability. Our
                      team was very motivated to
                      design a system to provide
                      cheap (free) drinkable water
                      that can make the difference
                      for a lot of people living in
                      slums inTegucigalpa.

                      The most challenging factor is
                      the complexity of the
                      environment taking into
                      account gangs, habbits,
                      religion, weather, ...

                      The system basically tries to
                      filter rainwater using sunlight.
                      It is a cheap product which can
                      be locally produced and
                      installed.

                                                                                   The assignment was to design
                                                                                   a thermostat. We had to make
                                                                                   a first draft of the electic
                                                                                   diagram, think about the
                                                                                   interfaces and feedback.

                                                                                   But the main accent was to
                                                                                   choose and integrate the right
                                                                                   electrical components.

                                                                                   We unified the thermostat
                                                                                   with an electric powered
                                                                                   h e a t e r. T h i s i s a g r e a t
                                                                                   advantage for heating small
                                                                                   rooms, such as bathrooms. A
                                                                                   well regulated and regulatable
                                                                                   heating system is more
                                                                                   comfortable for the users and
                                                                                   for the environment. We
                                                                                   choose all the electric parts for
                                                                                   a minimal energy con-
                                                                                   sumption.

  • 8. PU-FOAM , 2007 Searching a new market, generating new ideas and designing applications to use the waste produced during the production of PU-foam. This assignment was in col- laboration with Recticel. The concept uses the waste as a filling for curtains. These curtains can better isolate windows at night. It should encourage people to install a full extra insulation package. 'This project was elected by Recticel as one of the top three projects.   • 9. PRO-CARTON , 2007 This product is the result of a contest of the company PRO-Carton. The assignment was to make a cardboard package for food. Within this context a package for wine was designed. It can be fold open to raise the wine bag. In this position it is easy to hold your glass under the tap. The wine package can easily be produced of 1 piece of carton and some standard folding processes. The result was nominated for the price in alcoholic drinks.   • 10. STAIRSTICK , 2008 The StairStick was develloped as a redesign of a stairlift. D u r i n g a s m a l l m a r ke t research normal stairlifts seemed to be expensive and unpractical because they only focus on one stair. The StairStick helps older people to climb every stair. It’s basicly a walking stick but there is a difference when climbing a stair.Then a part of the grip slides down. This part is half a step high. Now the user only has to raise his leg half a step.   • 11. SMART , 2008 During a design theme week about cars we designed this new trunk concept for Smart. We deleted the trunk lid. This saves a lot of materials, production processes and costs of small cars like the Smart. Making it an even more ecologic car.   • 12. BARRIER , 2008 For this project the goal was to design a non-electric powered low cost barrier for cars Here it was very important to make a design allowing an easy and cheap assembly. Using as much as possible standard available parts. The system works with little plates who can’t turn down without using the handle (=paying).   • 13. LAMP II , 2008 This ecological lamp is a variation on a normal manual wind-up lamp.. Because most of the time when people use a flashlight at home (cellar, attic, ...) they need there hands. With design of LAMP II it becomes easy to put it down wherever you want. The light can shine in all possible directions thanks to the special shaped feet.   • 14. BETAFENCE , 2008 The project was in cooperation with Betafence. They make metal fences and wanted to introduce a new consumer product, using these fences. Therefore we started designing a new material using the strengths of the fences. We invented a light weight soft structure with foam.The fence was used as a die to create a structured foam. The metal wires inside made it possible to shape it in many ways. With this material we developed a changeable 3D carpet for children.   • 15. GLASSILED , 2008 Glassiled is a company that has the knowledge to produce led’s integrated in glass. They asked us to develop new products using this technology. The final product uses the principle of total internal reflection inside the glass. This light, captured inside the glass, reflects on the text written with a fibreglass composite so the text itself starts to light.   • 17. EMOTIONAL DESIGN , 200ç Emodesign is an under- estimated factor in the industrial design sector. Customers don’t buy the most technical high-end products. They decide their purchase largely by emotions. To understand the aspects of emodesign we wrote a manual with a lot of examples and scientific information about emotions, sences, perception, ...   • 18. NEWDOOR , 200ç For the James Dyson Award we designed a new concept to open and close a door. People often have problems while handling doors. The most ergonomic movement is to push a door. This counts for opening the door but also for closing. So we designed a door that could easily be opened and closed by pushing. Another advantage of the newdoor is that it takes less space when opened. We made a 1:1 prototype and tested it in real life. For a small movie about the functioning, check youtube.   • 19. MATERION , 200ç At Howest they have a special location to store, test and compare materials. The goal was to set the foundations to make it an interactive classroom. The entire group of about 30 students worked as one team. Dries and I were responsible for the interior arrangement and flow. TELEVIC , 200ç < PART1 The first part was an intensive program with an inter- disciplinary team of students from all over Europe.The goal was to make a modular conference unit, integrating the newest technologies. PART2 > Jan De Paepe and I had to further develop the design of this project. The most important deliverable was a morphologic overview of alternatives for the specific functions of a conference system. With this overview it became possible to choose thousands of combinations.   • 21. PETELLA , 200ç This project was all about design for sustainability. Our team was very motivated to design a system to provide cheap (free) drinkable water that can make the difference for a lot of people living in slums inTegucigalpa. The most challenging factor is the complexity of the environment taking into account gangs, habbits, religion, weather, ... The system basically tries to filter rainwater using sunlight.   • 22. THERMOSTAT , 200ç The assignment was to design a thermostat. We had to make a first draft of the electic diagram, think about the interfaces and feedback. But the main accent was to choose and integrate the right electrical components. We unified the thermostat with an electric powered h e a t e r. T h i s i s a g r e a t advantage for heating small rooms, such as bathrooms. A well regulated and regulatable heating system is more comfortable for the users and for the environment.
