Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a government initiative launched on April 12, 2005, aimed at promoting safe institutional deliveries among pregnant women from below poverty line (BPL) households in India. The scheme targets all pregnant women over the age of 19, particularly focusing on states with low institutional delivery rates, offering financial benefits for childbirth and health services. ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activists) play a crucial role in registering beneficiaries, facilitating health services, and supporting maternal health care throughout pregnancy and post-delivery.
