Job-Seeking Strategies / Restless Development

Editor's Notes

  • #2: I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU SOME STRATEGIES THAT REALLY WORK IN BUILDING A NETWORK AND GETTING A JOB.
  • #3: take a test / play a concert
  • #4: Let’s say you were interested in getting a job at Bank M. First, look at their website. Do research first. use the internet. Look at their website Look at social media - facebook, linkedin, twitter Study first.
  • #5: There are three general types of cover letters:   The application letter which responds to a known job opening The prospecting letter which inquires about possible positions The networking letter which is building a network of contacts
  • #6: Purpose of this letter is to get an interview in response to a known vacancy. Highlight relevant experience from key words in the job description. Show your specific skills or experience. Don't just write a letter saying you want a job. Use keywords - if they are looking for an accountant who knows specific software, highlight your knowledge or experience. Give another example. Close by looking forward to meeting them to discuss how you might help contribute to the company.
  • #7: PURPOSE BUIILD CONTACTS within an industry or company. This is to get more information about their industry, about the company, what it’s like to work there. DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!!! ASK IF YOU CAN TAKE THEM TO COFFEE DO NOT ASK FOR A JOB!!! DO NOT SEND YOUR CV!!!!
  • #8: A lot of people think the way to get a job is to send a letter with a CV asking for a job. IT DOES NOT WORK! You are demonstrating that you know something about them and are inquiring to see if they have any needs. Example – you read that Tumbo Holdings is opening up a new branch in Kitijonyama. They haven’t advertised any vacancies, but you are writing to enquire about potential vacancies. DO NOT SEND YOUR CV. DO NOT ASK FOR A JOB. HIGHLIGHT RELEVANT EXPERIENCE. ASKING FOR A MEETING.
  • #9: Top tips: Look for an internship relevant to your desired job or field Look for volunteering opportunities with charities (maybe list some orgs here?) Network with people already working to gain insights and information Try working on your own initiatives and seek support from those around you When volunteering or doing an internship, develop your skills, embrace your talents and demonstrate your confidence
  • #10: Picture of him and a quote – tell the story of Juma
  • #11: Dates, Company names and duties provided by yourself should be correct and provide an accurate picture of your experiences to date.
  • #12: Limit the info on this slide Dates, Company names and duties provided by yourself should be correct and provide an accurate picture of your experiences to date.
  • #13: Focus on the relevant experiences and skills Start with the present, then drawing from your past and finish with the future. BAD – I’m Machano Omari, I live at mbagala with my wife Mariam and two Kids, Jamila and Janeth. I love watching football and my favorite food is Ugali nyama choma. I really love my family that’s why I want this job so I can make some money to support my family GOOD – My name is Yunus Patric, a holder of BA Economics from the UDSM. Prior to my current role as Grants manager at RD, I used to work as Grants officer at Bank M, and now I look for other opportunities to advance my career and this is the best one for me
  • #14: Link your long term careergoals with the position your are interviewing for Keep your answer work related Stress your interest in a long-term career Show enthusiasm and ambition “My goal right now is to find a position at an organization where I can grow and take on new challenges over time. Ultimately, I’d like to assume more leadership responsibilities and get involved in organization’s strategic management. Most importantly, I want to work for an organization where I can build a career.”
  • #15: Develop a list of your relevant skills and traits – think about one or two things that describe you. Key things you want to highlight. Ie I am really creative and I can usually find a solution to any problem. Our I am patient and I can deal with people even when they are really angry OR, I learn quickly. Demonstrate your strengths with your relevant accomplishments Remember, if those strengths are not relevant to the job, they do not matter at all. “My greatest strength is patience. This permits me to work with many people of different levels of ability and handle difficult situations calmly
  • #16: What they are really asking is "where do you see room to improve your skills?" “ I don’t have any weakness” shows no honesty Be honest to a certain degree without ruining your chances at the opportunity Confess a real but fixable weakness and your recovery method and show what you learned from it! “I think one area I could work on is my delegation skills. I have a tendency to take on a big work load myself. I realized that I can slow things down if I am too controlling.”
  • #17: Now I'd like to invite Richard back -- would you like to add anything?
