John Locke By: Ivneet, Sandy
Theories Sensations of objects arise from powers in the object itself Men are by nature free and equal against claims that God had made all people naturally subject to a monarch People have rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and property, that have a foundation independent of the laws of any particular society There were certain moral truths that applied to all people, regardless of the particular place where they lived or the agreements they had made Divine law and natural law are consistent and can overlap in content, but they are not coextensive
Knowledge Our experiences provided us with what he termed “simple” and complex Considered that there are 3 main types of knowledge: Intuitive- most certain and most obvious Demonstrative – when we put simple ideas together to create complex ones Sensitive – The most uncertain because it relies on evidence of the senses
Responding to George Berkeley considered Locke to have opened the door to atheism and skepticism by his view of knowledge (that the thing possessed these the qualities of intuitive demonstrative and sensitive could never really be known itself). John Locke and Thomas Hobbes both agreed that a ruler of some sort appeared absolutely necessary for a country to thrive and flourish. Without a leader, the country would fall away into nothing. In the political sense, the two philosophers agreed only on this subject
Different From Berkeley attempted to show that rather than sensations of objects arising from powers in the object itself, as Locke thought, the experiences were actually in the perceiver (us) Hobbes believed that man needed a ruler or a king to guide them while Locke disagreed and thought there was no need for one man to make the decisions of all
Empiricist reject the idea that all our knowledge comes from rational principles Locke’s answer to the question which of our perception are real or true? is the existences of primary and secondary qualities he’s also empiricist because he considered that knowledge could be of certain types depending on how ideas could be compared
Main Vocabulary creator of representative theory of perception his view objects exist as distinct and separate entities from human beings external objects trigger the perception process by stimulation the human sense organs
