Hi Tessa!
How are you today? I just wanted to reach out and let you know about how successful
my sites have already become with Joomla. I started my own business and already
have 3 paying clients on board with more on the horizon. I placed this ad and now
almost think it was too good of a deal. Now I just hope I can keep up :)
Anyways, I am still looking for an internship but have an interview for one on Monday.
Thanks again for the Joomla experience! I am looking forward to getting involved
more with the community meetups soon as my business grows.
Take Care!

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Good day. Welcome everybody. I’m not really the type of person who can easily speak about how I’m feeing or what I’m thinking. So this is probably going to be hard for me. I feel like I’m opening myself up to the world right now. Although I haven’t rehearsed, I will do my best to speak from my heart. In this presentation, I’m going to allow you to join my personal world and see what I’ve been doing. My personal world is also my professional world. I never stop working. Working is my passion. (Well, sleeping is too, but that’s aside from the point right now)
  • #6: Ski’s : Volkl, Madshus, and K2 Snowboards: K2 SB, Ride, and Morrow (Liquid and 5150 discontinued)
  • #7: How I got into Open Source? Nick Savov.
  • #10: Most of my success comes from my mentor
  • #11: Persistent with persuading advisory board to let me create a CMS hands-on course, specifically Joomla! Agreeance – If I called it a “SEO and CMS” class, and threw in a few SEO assignments, I can create the curriculum *objectives* Debate – Students constantly asking “Why Joomla! And not WordPress or Drupal?” Love at first Site – Student falls in love with Joomla! After building their first website
  • #12: I selected “Joomla Explained” because of how simple the reading is. It’s like a tutorial throughout a book that my grandma could follow. The images and steps are very clear and it teaches you how to build a Joomla! Site by building a fun e “Joomlaville” site. Although the textbook was in 2.5, we still used Joomla! 3 to build our websites. Now that the Joomla! 3 Explained book is out, it’s time for me to update some curriculum. So when Steve writes a new Joomla! Book, that puts work on my end of things! Darn him!!!!
  • #13: I teach this course as an online class in our regular college web application development associates degree as well as the certification. This course is also offered in another program that my college offers called “PACE-IT” where you can take the entire Web Application Certification at a self paced rate with no due dates on any assignment, quiz, or project. Since online courses can be difficult, I offer weekly live webinars to help both programs succeed. “No Student Left Behind” is my motto. If a student runs into an issue and feels unmotivated, stuck, and not encouraged to proceed, I’ll speak with that student, work with them through all their issues with their work, and try to motivate and encourage them in every possible way. Example: I recently had a student, in the PACE-IT self paced program that was falling behind on assignments, not understanding stuff but still turning work in, who emailed me letting me know he is doing his best to understand and isn’t feeling like he really gets it. I sent him a long email explaining how I feel about his progress in the class, which was excellent and better than most students and doesn’t realize it. I told him I was in his place before taking the same web development degree and it may start out difficult, but it will get much easier over time. With a just this little letter of encouragement, I’ve noticed a drastic difference with his work and how quickly he’s been going through his assignments and projects. I can already see that he will become a very successful student. 
  • #14: Building a practice site using Joomla! Explained: Learn how to create categories, articles, and menus. Learn the basics of installing and managing extensions.
  • #15: Building a non-profit Site. How did I find the non-profit? Hosting sponsorship with CloudAccess Talk about Autism Outreach Foundation http://autismoutreachfoundation.org Autism Outreach Foundation’s mission is to help low income families receive grants so that their children can receive the therapy that they need. GET Program http://edcc2.cloudaccess.net GET Program is a non profit organization that provides at-risk and underserved youth and their families with support, opportunities, and resources that promote the educational, vocational, and personal success. Next Program: “Camp Inspire” is a non-profit organization. Their purpose is to provide education about nutrition and movement in an effort to facilitate healthy lifestyle changes by offering camps, lectures, classes, workshops and other related educational programs Next Program: http://fallspreschool.org/ Falls Co-op Preschool: (No Mission) “They provide low cost daycare/preschool for stay at home moms needing a break and/or for low income families by having a group of mothers take turns being the caretaker” Do you have a non-profit or know a non-profit who is needing a 100% free website? Please contact me at tessa.mero@email.edcc.edu
  • #16: Cloudaccess has an education program that provides free hosting for teachers and their students. http://www.cloudaccess.net/products/school-program.html
  • #17: Throughout the class students will constantly talk about how much they love Joomla! “There’s always that one student who decides they want to learn WordPress because Joomla! Is too difficult for them* but sometimes it takes a little bit of patience A couple examples of student success: *next slide*
  • #18: Wow does this make me feel great! THIS IS THE REASON WHY I ENJOY TEACHING! “I responded to him that I have a non-profit who contacted me just recently and looking for an intern” Google Doc keeping track of students
  • #19: After the launch of my first Joomla class in the Winter of 2013, I had the entire class working on the non-profit website. It was a tough decision for the non-profit organization, but they ended up selecting a student’s project to be the one to go LIVE. Check it out here: http://autismoutreachfoundation.org He did a fantastic job for his first Joomla! Site! He also runs his own business doing graphic design and CMS sites!
  • #20: Join tech meetups for extra credit. Opportunity to network and speak to other companies/businesses Connected students with different small businesses. Constantly mentioning that they need to get involved with contributing to open source projects. I’ll make it their homework to get involved and also learn how to work with github as well.
  • #21: So I wanted to end it at this point. I wasn’t sure if this presentation was going to be over the time or extremely under the time. What we learned from this presentation, and what I wanted to get out to the world is, Joomla is making such a huge impact and difference for these students. JOOMLA NEEDS TO BE IN EVERY WEB DEVELOPMENT CURRICULUM at all colleges. Heck, why not high schools too? Thank you.
