Now the world is a different place “ Breaking stories of importance, or topics that capture the imagination, lead to floods of content that quickly overwhelm processes and technical platforms ” – Robin Haman Map: xkcd.com
THE C WORD Community/citizen journalists creating content as well as mainstream media Content Farming sites: Low quality but high impact (eg. wikiHow; Answers.com) Collaboration + Curation = Context
Conversations and exchanges of information – data- are happening across the online world. Mainstream media is only a part of that. Journalists who can use data, and present it in relevant, accessible, engaging packages, will find an involved and participatory audience for their work. The culture shift – from journalist-as-broadcaster to participator – is still happening in MSM.
What Curation brings Engage audiences: Users collaborate to interpret data The wisdom of crowds: Use networks to collect and collate information Journalist adds context: Value, worth, veracity and trust Builds interactivity: Invite participation, be a sharing host Extend reach: Networks spread information Commercial opportunities
Data is everywhere
What they say… “ Hand crafted content is dead. Long live fast food content” (TechCrunch) “ Low-Cost Content Production On A Massive Scale” (ReadWriteWeb) “ The first step is evolution the second step is revolution” (Nova Spivack, Semantic Web Entrepreneur) “ Social beats search” (Fred Wilson, venture capitalist) “ Data is (are) journalism” (Author What Would Google Do? and blogger Jeff Jarvis
