Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Moses in 1860 in Ohio and grew up poor on a farm, learning to hunt from a young age to provide for her family. She married Frank Butler in 1876 and began performing with his act when his partner fell ill, choosing the stage name Annie Oakley. Oakley toured widely with circuses and Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, becoming one of the first American female sports stars and a role model for women. She died in 1926 at age 66 in Ohio.
