When this plot came up – with the promise of exquisitely framed views of Table Mountain – they grabbed the opportunity to bring their vision to life. ‘It’s a special house,’ says Damian of the uplifting, airy and light-suffused space. It is indeed a manifestation of their love of design with the clean-lined architecture complemented by carefully considered details, furnishings and accessories. Central to the open-plan layout is the dramatic timber, steel and glass staircase that appears to float weightlessly between the two levels. ‘It’s the definite wow factor when you walk into the house,’ Damian agrees. They’ve punctuated the double- volume space with a cluster of Tom Dixon Etch pendants, which by night create an enchanting sparkly effect. The couple share a particular taste for Italian design and wanted to bring a chic European aesthetic into their home. And it shows, from the elegant living spaces to the edgy, dark-walled bathrooms. ‘If I had to build another house I’d take it a step further and really raise the bar,’ Damian says with a smile. ‘I learned so many lessons the first time round.
