CO2, SOx and NOx are generated when fuel such as heavy oil is burned. Therefore, to reduce emissions of CO2, SOx and NOx ships need to reduce fuel consumption for main propulsion and also for power generation. Two proposals to achieve this: 1. Ships pick a route that may require less fuel. 2. Ships utilize renewable energy.

To achieve the above a new system is called the Aquarius Management & Automation System or Aquarius MAS for: • Performance monitoring function that can calculate fuel efficiency. • Controlling and monitoring function of alternative energy. • Monitoring of Nox, Sox emissions. This system provides one resource for managing energy use and monitoring emissions.
