Mobile media is a large and growing global industry, with over 3.3 billion users worldwide at the start of 2008. Key technologies for mobile media include interactive voice response (IVR), short message service (SMS), multimedia message service (MMS), unstructured supplementary service data (USSD), wireless application protocol (WAP), and location-based services. These technologies enable various applications and services. Africa is seen as an important future growth market for mobile media due to low PC penetration and initial costs. A case example is provided of a South African sports publication that successfully launched a mobile site and premium SMS services.
